The new LP from Jim Haynes is a haunted and provocative endeavor, rust-covered and mysterious. It is the result of an immersive listening/recording process through which Haynes’ singular techniques intersected with an unfamiliar, disquieting landscape…
“The album was mostly composed, recorded, and sketched during an Estonian residency at MoKS for a program that was hosted by Simon Whetham and John Grzinich called Active Crossover. The goal of that program was to bring together various artists whose work pertained directly or indirectly to environmental recordings. When John asked me about what kinds of spaces I was interested in seeking out before I arrived, I mentioned that I would like to investigate sites that had a considerable amount of electro-magnetic disruption which I could capture on radio along with sites of psychic distress.
The Estonian landscape is pocked with abandoned buildings of considerable size and decay. Many of the excursions for Active Crossover engaged the large crumbling Soviet-era structures. Given that the electricity was off in many of these sites, I had to rely on shortwave to capture any electro-magnetic disruptions instead of any fluctuations from shitty wiring or weird Soviet power transformers... and the radio reception from that particular time and that particular place (i.e. southeastern Estonia) was eerie and unsettled. The crackle, drone, and noise is unlike that which is heard in the United States, looming with a (possibly perceived) paranoia of the Russian state just a few kilometers away. That said, Estonia had experienced an encroachment from Russia as the Russian military kidnapped/extradited an Estonian intelligence officer who was on Estonian soil at the time not too far from where I was staying. Given the contemporary military actions of Russia reclaiming Crimea from Ukraine, this incident put many an Estonian on edge.
The A-side to 'Flammable Materials' reflects this aestheticized paranoia through bursts of static, pulsed noise, and atonal sinews of sustained frequency. The B-side is wholly more introspective, cutting up an Estonian radio broadcast into phonemes, disjointed phrases, and cryptic speech. What few words that can be recognized from the Estonian pertain to the forces of globalization. From the context of someone who understands very little of the language, these snippets of a female voice clip like a surrealist collage or a Dada poem. Compositionally, I was thinking very much of Robert Ashley’s “Purposeful Lady Slow Afternoon” and the Nurse With Wound recontextualization of such sounds.” - Jim Haynes
Based in California, Jim Haynes has exhibited internationally at the San Francisco Museum Of Modern Art, the Lausanne Underground Film Festival, the Berkeley Art Museum, WestSpace (Melbourne, Australia), and Diapason (New York). Recorded media has been published through Editions Mego, Ghostly International, Drone Records, Hooker Vision, Intransitive, Semperflorens, Elevator Bath, and The Helen Scarsdale Agency. He has also been awarded residencies at the Djerassi Resident Artists Program (California), Recombinant Media Labs (California), Jack Straw Productions (Seattle), and MoKS (Estonia). He has participated in a number of fruitful collaborations with Loren Chasse, Keith Evans, Steven Stapleton, and M.S. Waldron. Until 2015, Haynes was the Vice President and Curatorial Director for 23five Incorporated, a nonprofit organization dedicated to the development and increased awareness of sound arts within the public arena. He is also the lone occupant at The Helen Scarsdale Agency.

“Kanon – Torsi”
Ernstalbrecht Stiebler (b. 1934) is a German composer of minimalist and reductionist contemporary music. His name is still most closely associated with his long-time position as radio editor and producer for New Music at the Hessian Broadcasting Corporation (Hessischer Rundfunk), but his own compositional oeuvre – beginning in 1955 and continuing until now – has in the recent years attracted more attention with various concerts and several releases.
Having attended the Darmstadt International Summer Courses for New Music from 1958 onwards, Stiebler decided in 1963 to leave serial music behind and instead opt for his own reductionist style built on minimalist structures and repetitions, though not in any way related to the so-called Minimal Music but rather influenced by Minimalism in visual art. In terms of composers of his time, the closest stylistic relationship that could be drawn is that to Morton Feldman. Stiebler’s approach is best summarized in his own words: “Music is too important to burden it with emotions.”
This LP pairs two organ-based works: “Kanon” (1980) for organ, electric organ and wind instruments, and “Torsi” (2002) for organ in three movements: “Torso”, “Organa minima” and “Cantus”. The latter recording, made at St. Stephen’s Church in Konstanz (organ: Hans-Peter Schulz), was previously released on CD by m=minimal. “Kanon” is so far unreleased. Amelia Cuni was born in Milan and has lived in India for more than 10 years
where she studied dhrupad singing with various renowned masters. Werner Durand has been performing his own music for saxophones, Iranian ney and self-made wind instruments since the late 70s. He started building his own wind
instruments from plexi-glass, PVC and metal tubes in the early 80s and has performed in various groups including The Thirteenth Tribe and Armchair Traveller. For more than 20 years, Cuni and Durand have been performing together as a duo as well as in collaborations such as Tonaliens and Born Of Six.
Diasporagas, sub-titled “Ancient Trends and New Traditions in Indo-European
Music”, summarizes their various musical projects in which her Indian raga singing met with his minimalist and experimental approach. In all of their collaborations, they have been creating unique forms and expanding the palette
of their sound worlds while keeping the essence of raga music, justifying the
use of the term in its original meaning. The title is meant to be understood as
a statement to provoke reflections on our ideas of cultural identity vs.
globalization, and tradition vs. experimentation.
A central Diasporagas work is “Hiss (mastered noise)” for dhrupad singing,
invented wind instruments, Indian percussion and samples of historical recordings by Indian singers. It is partly based on their earlier work “Gramophone Saraswati” which involved replicas of Luigi Russolo’s Intonarumori instead of the Indian recordings. This LP includes “Hiss (mastered noise)” and two other pieces entitled “Aqua Shiva” and “Agana Song”. Edition of 300 in a full-color sleeve with a printed inner sleeve reproducing the score of “Hiss mastered noise”.

Behind the one I had with the two guitarists of Sonic Youth lies the amazingly sharp eyes of a journalist, or more accurately a musical historian of our times, who recognised the spine of an album on which I appear, from a photo in a magazine. of an interview w Thurston Moore. Thurston is sitting in front of part of his immense record collection. This was enough to prompt a meeting prior to the group taking the stage in Marseille and opened the door to a collaboration, sporadic but ongoing since 1997. The duet with Thurston was recorded in NY, in January 1997 at SY’s studios and the one with Lee at the Grim studios, the musical stage of Montevideo, in May 2010. Coming after the release of "MMMR" on Numero Zero Audio / Xeric, and of "A Possible Dawn" on Hat Noir with Loren Mazzacane Connors, where the two guitarists played together for the first time in a project other than SY since the formation of the group, the release of these two duets on a young French label confirms, as if there was any need, the interest that these two musicians inspire on the old continent." At the beginning a one day event in the church Le Corbusier in ST Pierre de Firminy (France) with the sound artists Jérome Noetinger, Christian Malfray, Jean François Minjard, Jérome Montagne, Pierre Faure, Mathias Forge, Hervé Boghossian, Bruno Capelle, Nicolas Dick, Hervé Durand, Jean François Plomb. The entire space was occupied by the artists and equipment. Audience could go in the main room for live acts, a smaller room for live processing and the third room for live diffusion on 12 speakers. The entire event has been recorded. And the label Dysmusie asked the composer Christine Mannaz-Dénarié to work with these sound sources. She composed two musique concrete pieces which give her own translation of this event into a very poetic way. A very nice release !

Percussionist Kris Vanderstraeten is one of the unsung heroes of Belgian free improvisation. Trommels!, the second release by Dropa Disc, is also Vanderstraeten’s second solo album. It lures the listener into a universe without rules, a place where intuition and imagination decide what happens. Vanderstraeten does not play by the rules, he pushes them to the max. His drum kit isn’t just an instrument: it becomes a sound generator to explore the maximal potential of texture, dynamics and space.

The Drone as a metaphor for everything that vibrates, that releases energy - from atoms and elementary particles to the hum of the earth and the universe. Gydja (New Zealand). Enchanting female drone esoterica by an artist who is also known through her stunning artworks for Cold Spring and other labels. Through magnetic winds and metallic clouds the long track “Gjallarbru” creates a wonderful secretful and sensitive atmosphere; very lonely and frosty, like a cold and clear consciousness released on a high mountain, on top of the world...
Clade (Scotland / USA). Named after a notion taken from biology science (=Monophylum), this duo is based in Scotland and USA, alluring with very focused minimal drones on so far four releases. The two tracks presented here stand out with their use of somehow refractional, fibrous sounds, placed on monotonus drones with a very sedative and insistent effect...
Monocube (Ukraine). This “ethereal drone” discovery from Ukraine moves musically through endless spaces, creating choral-like aural clouds and strange melodies => self-supporting drones with an incredible width, when even the smallest particles of concrete microsound encountering are exciting, entering into a heavenly “song of the sirens” choir..
Yrsel (France). Another bi-national project is this French-Swedish collaboration of Julien Louvet (2:13 PM, etc.) and C-J Larsgarden (Ondo),who released three albums so far. Their track “Krstnhmnbrtncrt” consists of very heavy, swallowing drones with atonal elements coming to the surface, diffus and poisonous but also lulling you into a deep (dead) sleep., slowly drowning in dense humming waves of cryptic drones...

“A second LP from Micro_Penis on doubtfulsounds, 2 years after the noteworthy first one. A second disc that nearly didn’t come out as two members spent long stays in the mental hospitals, so the band couldn’t record sessions. In addition to the heavy medication, those two members undertook therapeutic workshop with the artist Anne Zimmerman, where they expressed themselves. K. and S. revealed themselves through sculpture, using rubbish, and in particular vegetable peelings and stuff found in the hospital garbage bins. They made up several creatures, hybridization of sexual obsession and vegetable shape. Anne Zimmerman proposed to develop some of their work with rubber. Every copy of the "Tolvek" record (alsatian word for "moron") comes with one of them. Despite the repeated hospitalisations of K. and S. and the year-long meditative retreats in a Zen temple in the south of Italy of H. and O., the rare recording sessions which comprise this new album are the moments where the inner demons have got the upper hand over the fragile mental health of each member, transformed each time into an outlet, or, exorcism. “Sun Stabbed is a guitar duo formed at Grenoble in 2005. “Des lumières, des ombres, des figures” is the first LP of the band resulted from the first private session that has been recorded. This session happened in Le 102’s basement, the 11th February 2009. The editing / mixing / reworking has been done in 2010 after forgetting a little bit what was recorded. The music is maybe the most varied disc of the band so far, with some classic sun stabbed tracks (ambient / drone / noise) but also some sound “dérives”. “Schlim”
Schlim (slime in alsatian dialect) Micro_penis’ third lp released by Doubtful Sounds, is the final instalment of a trilogy. This record is made from rare recording sessions, stretching in time from 2011 until 2015 at the N.E.M. Studio (Noise Ensemble of Mulhouse) located in the Mer Rouge building, Mulhouse, France. The name of the game, collectively agreed on, was that no band member could be chemically restrained. For a psychotic can only ever be himself freed from one’s treatment, thus expressing one’s inside kept insanity. Another rule stated that during each session, one would have to use a different instrument, be it acoustic or electronic, no matter wether mastered or not.
This huge interpersonal tension, through a violent rupture in terms of playing modes and tones, resulted in a broad range of pieces, very much dissmilar from one another.
Then the group switched to an autarkic mode for a couple of weeks. They finalized and gave birth to their new weird baby during endless listening sessions and mixing sessions including sonic tinkering that only those who do not pretend to be mad are capable of.
Cyclothymia and dementia are hidden in each sound, each track of Schlim.

DIY because it was made outside of any academecism and done with the equipment that I owned at the time of the recordings, appropriate or not.
Two tracks Inter…, in-between : one composition, intermezzo, was done 14 years ago and the other one, interfluve, 2 years ago. The connection between those tracks is the original sound material which was recorded at about the same time (early 2000s).
Time and/or space are the central in the two compositions.
The first track result from the in-between from Deleuze and Guattari’s A thousand plateaus and the second one is taken from the space in between two talwegs.
One where the sound has been deteriorated through the mixing process of a cassette 4 tracks tape recorder and the other one where the erosion is the essential question.
But two tracks so different that they are separated on each side of the LP and with the recommendation to not listen to them one after the other.

From the label : “offset is the exploration of the soundscape of a printing workshop, a journey in the depth of the mechanical and industrial energy of rotary presses. Composed from field recordings made in two different printing facilities (in Grenoble and Paris from november 2011 to february 2012), the work is deliberately situated in between the sound document about the over-determined environment of a work place and the electroacoustic re-composition/manipulation. A series of variations on textures, rhythms, cycles and patterns formed by the producing and reproducing machines. Here, the soundscape is regarded as a social and cultural phenomenon as much as it is acoustic: the recorded matter is both the damaging and alienating by-product of the production process, and already holds a musical dimension, marked by a hundred years of mechanical fantasies, as cultivated by the Futurists, industrial music or techno. The issue, then, was to study how the noise of a machine becomes music as much as it was to understand how a musical culture produces an alternative listening of the environment. The first side of offset explores the rhythmic patterns of mechanical “cycles”; the second focuses on “fluxes” and continuous phenomena. Co-realised by universinternational and doubtful sounds. (ÉCHOS) is not a documentation about a festival, it is not a compilation or a remix album. And yet some of these things and more are infusing through the 15 tracks of the record. But mostly, (ÉCHOS) is the interpretation of a place and moment in sounds, an essay in alpine electroacoustics.
The proposal made to pali meursault was both very clear and a bit vague: recording a place, the context of a festival and the music made by 14 artists, in order to recompose an original creation. With, for reassurance, a formal request addressed to all: “would you agree to have your music captured, appropriated, revisited, re-interpreted, maybe even betrayed?”
If such a thing was possible and had any meaning at all, it would be because of the place: the valley of Faï and the giant horn speakers that had been set up there 20 years before to echo against the cliff on the other side. Invited the previous year, pali knew that playing there implied to let go of sounds (more than usual). To hear them - to almost look at them - disappear into the mountain and come back transformed: a few seconds' echo and already they belong to the valley.

In its two parts that cover an LP side each, Outposts creates a dream-like motion from distant drones of vaguely defined shape towards totally disembodied sound. The question of what is creating the sounds the listener is perceiving becomes more and more oblivious in the course of listening. Outposts is also the first release on the DOM Bartwuchs label since the 1994 TNB-Organum Wreck LP and is now being pressed in an edition of 300 copies.”

Idiot twins Burchill and Slim may behave as though they own Sussex, but Constance and Nyoukis are immune to their surroundings, making livid eyes at confused glitter vixens up and down this squalid Isle.
Hair & Treasure are Alex Jones and Gonçalo F Cardoso, a prankster randy dust duo from nowhere dwelling on tape loops and webbed finger piano ballads. The material was culled from a mound of who cares electro-acoustic improv sessions as an offering to the associated deities of the zwieback buttermilk trade.

Yannick Dauby returns to Discrepant for Vol2 of his ongoing study of the sounds and sights on the Penghu Archipelago, Taiwan.
ló-kó -chhù - means, in Taiwanese, Coral House. Penghu Experimental Sound Studio Vol2 uses interviews, field recordings, found objects and subtle electronic manipulation to transpose Yannick’s impressions of the island’s natural beauty.
All sounds, field recordings and improvisations on electronic instruments, are from Penghu, Taiwan.

“Tsit lâu tsui. Penghu Experimental Sound Studio Vol.1”
Tsit lâu tsui means, in Taiwanese, a cycle of tide. Yannick Dauby is a French sound artist based in Taiwan since 2007. He relentless explores the soundscapes of his adopted island through field recording, audio documentaries and community projects. He also composes electroacoustic music and he's often found performing live using found objects, analogue devices and digital processing. He has created soundtracks and sound environments for contemporary dance, public art and films as well as being involved in various ecological and local traditional activities.
Dauby stayed in Peng-Hu, an archipelago located in the Taiwan Strait during several months in the first half of 2013. His daily activities included beachcombing, study and documentation of the reef animals, field recording, some teaching and also composing musique concrète in a temporary and probably the first experimental music studio, settled in Shili, a narrow village just between the inner and outer seas. From this old building he hear the seashores and announcements of the itinerant sellers as well as the rituals from a temple nearby. Immersed in this natural and cultural environment, Yannick composed the two sides on this record, using the sounds of the underwater fauna, the omnipresent waves, soundscapes of harbours, music played during funerals, shortwave radio broadcasts , in-site or indoor improvisations using old artefacts collected on the beaches and various sessions using analog electronic instruments. This LP becomes kind of a aural sketchbook of his stay and wandering in these islands on the invitation of the Penghu Citizens Foundation.

The ‘icon of post-everything’, Mike Cooper, returns to Discrepant with a recording of a live set recorded at the Controindicazioni Festival of Improvised Music in Rome in 2003.
The music moves very slowly through four movements: “Reluctant Swimmer”, “Movies is Magic”, “Virtual Surfer” and “Dolphins”. “Floating in out of the exotic ether and disappearing like smoke, engulfed in the alien hugeness of nature... a very elegant set by a visionary artist.”
Mike Cooper says “the first half is played on my old 1920s National tri-plate lapsteel guitar and the second half on my vietnamese electric lap steel. I also sing two songs along the way. “Movies is Magic” by Van Dyke Parks and “Dolphins” by Freid Neil. It was the first time I had ever sung the last song.”
LP artwork is a specially commissioned collage by US artist Evan Crankshaw.

“A Study into 21st Century Drone Acoustics”
Much attention is focused on drones as ‘eyes in the sky’. However for people on the ground, the sound of the drones is much more pervasive. Military drones fly at high altitudes and are more often heard than seen. The word drone itself is rooted in sound, referring to the noise of the male honeybee. The sound of drones in areas of conflict create frightening soundscapes that go on for many hours on end. The sound gives them nicknames like Zanana (buzz) in Palestine.
In this project, designer Ruben Pater (Drone Survival Guide) and composer Gonçalo F. Cardoso (Discrepant) join hands to focus on the auditive aspects of drones. What engines do drones have, and what do they sound like? Side A features recordings of 17 drone types, ranging from small consumer drones to large military drones, as contemporary bird songs. The B side presents a soundscape by Gonçalo F. Cardoso, inspired by the abusive and destructive power or drone technology. The composition focus on the conceptual (sound) life and death of an aerial drone machine in the 21st century.

Dialoghi Del Presente represents a truly unique approach to music making where each instrument and each sound are given ample time and space to develop. For the recording sessions leading to this remarkable work Luciano Cilio took up a role as multi-instrumentalist, performing on piano, guitar, flute, bass and mandola, also joined by musicians coming from different experiences and areas, who supply strings, extra woodwind and percussion. Almost impossible to define, the all-acoustic music of Cilio occupies a space between the devotional music of Popol Vuh’s Florian Fricke and the deep spiritual places of what would later be called holy minimalism (without any of the religious intents of the afore-mentioned references), with a surprising anticipation of the crystalline sparseness of pieces like “Fur Alina” by Arvo Part, and a feeling of intense suspension of time that can be associated to some of the most intimate compositions of Ligeti or Morton Feldman, yet maintaining a definite position outside the contemporary music of serial and academic inspiration.
