“Sonoris isn’t exactely known as an improv label, but they make an exception here with the work of three Italian improvisers, which are closely linked to the super improv label Fringes. I didn’t glance very much at the cover very much while playing this CD, so the notion that these are two guitarists and a percussionist struck me. Whatever they produce, its hard to pin down as guitar and percussion. They go by a slow curve from almost silence to almost noisy, with crackles (what sort of guitar produces crackles like a lap-top, me wonder in mild curiosity). There those recognizable AMM influenced bits (although their curve is usually even longer) and even a link to industrial music (the motor like buzz in ’Text Piece’). This makes this into a somewhat more varied CD, and you could even wonder if the variations aren’t too much. Myself, I thought it was ok and thought it was a well-entertaining CD.” (Frans de Waard / Vital weekly)

Illusion of Safety mainstay Burke and sonicist errant Dimuzio are a perfect pair. Their common chosen path is one of electroacoustic exploration, combining sampling, processing, tapes, and live noise-making (calling their enthusiastic instrumental and radio-knob manhandling "musicianship" would be overly generous) in live and studio settings. Each artist brings to the workbench an affinity for the nature of sound.
HZ documents a series of California performances presented by Burke and Dimuzio in October of 1997. The improvised tracks operate in the desolate arena of post-industrial sound, but the perpetrators take a page from the example of AMM's jazz-like metamusical interplay to imply a certain, if covert, human presence. Motors purr, hiss, scrape, and groan, setting up a foundation of sonorous drones for Burke and Dimuzio's sonic manipulations and electronic outbursts. The duo's efforts range from freakish alien-zoo atmospheres ("Aware," "Dross," "Outflow") to the labored workings of arcane machinery ("Dropforge," "Rota"). HZ strikes an especially poignant note on "Charastrigor," as radio strains drift sadly across the rubble of a bomb-scarred city square.

Artifical Memory Trace sort of is the right person to fit these traditions of electro-acoustic music: intelligentely composed with modern means (read: sampling), into relatively short pieces that hold the attention. Without any limitation he jumps back and forth in his sound material. Sometimes all the events seem to be apparent at the same time, but at other times one long curve is drawn, such as in the beautiful opening piece ’Skeletune(s)’. AMT can be placed among the likes of Illusion Of Safety and Brume. He has collaborated with Loren Chasse (as the duo Coelacanth), Keith Evans, Steve Stapleton (Nurse With Wound), and irr.app.(ext.). He runs the acclaimed Helen Scarsdale label, and works as the Editorial Director for 23five, a nonprofit organization dedicated to the development and increased awareness of sound arts within the public arena. He has written extensively on sound art, noise culture, minimalism, and general music experimentation for The Wire, The San Francisco Bay Guardian, Metro Pulse, The Sound Projector, and Chunklet.”

“This first album of cross-hemisphere hum by Seht (the nom de musique of one Stephen Clover) and Howard Stelzer emerged organically via tapes shared through the post between New Zealand and Boston over the course of a year or so. Without any spoken agenda or external organizing concept from the start, the music willed itself into a darkly psychedelic, implacably melancholy haze. A quick scramble of caffeinated tape action kicks things off, then the album rapidly dissipates into a thick, black sleep of environmental debris and humid fog. Worn loops were played into various outdoor acoustic environments (playgrounds, front porches, trees, other prosaic spots), then fed back into low-tech machines for further harmonic decay. Shapes form in the shadows and slip away as the edges blur. After a few attempts to heave itself up onto its feet, Exactly What You Lost eventually huffs its last breath and dissolves in a cavern of industrial tics. “

“Intransitive Recordings is extra-proud to present 1975, the debut solo album of tightly-coiled, crackling electronic ambience by C. Spencer Yeh. While “debut” may seem a strange word to use to describe an album by a guy with such a deep discography, Yeh explains that 1975 is like nothing anyone has heard from him before. “One thing is I really wanted to focus on a certain feeling of stasis. So much of what else I do just kinda pushes and pushes forward. 1975 is more vertical than horizontal, even though one can’t escape the horizontal completely.” Taking a confident step away from his familiar work as an improvising violinist and vocalist, from the mythology of his rock/noise band Burning Star Core, and from his recent forays into pop music, the omnivorous Yeh here reveals himself to be a composer of unsettling electro-acoustic miniatures. Yeh approached his source material with a desire to be transparent, even literal, and to avoid straightforward narrative. The literal is there in the deceptively matter-of-fact track titles - “Drone”, “Voice”, “Shrinkwrap from Solo Saxophone CD”, “Two Guitars” - but knowing which sound source is buried beneath these tones does little to remove 1975’s sense of enveloping mystery. This is sensual abstract music with a light touch, a confident minimalism that only reveals its unsettling depth, sharp corners, and playful malevolence with repeat listens. For fans of Eliane Radigue, Hecker, Pita, or Kevin Drumm. Born in Taiwan, and now based in Brooklyn NY, C. Spencer Yeh is the one constant of the “band” Burning Star Core, whose other members have included Mike Shiflet and Trevor Tremaine & Robert Beatty of Hair Police. “Ten years after his debut CD, Stone Blind (Intransitive, 1997), Howard Stelzer presents Bond Inlets, his first widely available solo cassette-tape composition. Boston-based sound artist Stelzer was never happy with his first album, and threw away most of the pressing as soon as it returned from the factory. He took the occasion of his label’s tenth anniversary to dissect the source sounds of that work and filter it through the lens of the interceding decade in order to build a piece that more accurately reflects what his intentions were then and what his aesthetic is today. Bond Inlets is subtly emotional work of foreground drone that beats its head against the plastic walls of cassette-tape technology, laying bare the physicality of the process of its creation. The dying motors of cassette players, tape-saturated percussion, and blown-out condenser-mic wail are mixed with elements of new live improvisations and field recordings taken in his neighborhood to create oceans full of no-fidelity murk and evocative hiss. There is an implacable melancholy to Bond Inlets, with fragments of distant melodies that surface only to be subsumed again into the grime.”

It’s Hubert Zemler’s second solo album. In opposition to the fully improvised concert album Moped, this one is filled with pieces which are pre-composed to a much greater extent.
The album also contains two compositions inspired by electronic music, particularly by works of the ensemble Suaves Figures (Piotr Kurek and Sylvia Monnier). In these pieces, Hubert Zemler transcribed the electronically generated sounds to acoustic instruments, supported by an excellent percussionist Mi osz P ka a (Kwadrofonik, Mitch & Mitch, Hob Beats Percussion Group) playing the vibraphone.
The material was registered during night recording sessions in the basement of the Camaldolese church in the Bielany district of Warsaw the place of amazing acoustics with Sebastian Witkowski as a sound engineer.

Ottavi hails from Nantes, France and Workman from New Zealand, but their overlapping concerns and aesthetics have drawn them together, and misenlian contains the results of their initial collaborations.
Julien Ottavi studied sound and photography at the art school of Nantes. He is a founding member of Formanex, an electroacoustic quartet performing graphic scores from the 20th and 21st centuries, including works by Cardew, Cage, Wolff, Feldman, Brown, and Ralf Wehowsky, as well as the founder of the Nantes-based experimental music organization Apo33 (responsible for running the label Fibrr among numerous other activities). His most notable previous release is the superb solo CD Nervure Magnétique (Sigma Editions, 2003).

Later, Workman invited Ottavi to play a series of US shows, where they performed solo sets on the same bill and grew to be good friends. After being invited to record as a duo for Erstwhile, Ottavi came to the US for a month in 2003 and the two performed and recorded constantly. Based in Workman’s Brooklyn apartment, the duo literally improvised for days at a time - when they slept, the computers continued to generate sound, with changes in the PureData patches triggered by microphones placed outside the apartment - and intermittently recorded the results. Ottavi and Workman directly followed up this intense recording period with several long-duration live performances, each set lasting between 3 and 6 1/2 hours. By the end of Ottavi’s stay in the US, the duo had amassed approximately fifty hours of recorded material, which they later selected and shaped into misenlian.

Based in Workman’s Brooklyn apartment, the duo literally improvised for days at a time - when they slept, the computers continued to generate sound, with changes in the PureData patches triggered by microphones placed outside the apartment - and intermittently recorded the results. Ottavi and Workman directly followed up this intense recording period with several long-duration live performances, each set lasting between 3 and 6 1/2 hours. By the end of Ottavi’s stay in the US, the duo had amassed approximately fifty hours of recorded material, which they later selected and shaped into misenlian.

20.SV was brought to light in the year 2000 by guitarist-sound sculpturer Osman Arabi as an ongoing sound project with no restrictions. “Live in Los Angeles”
“Edition of 600. Line is proud to present Live in Los Angeles by the collaborative performance project Chessmachine by Richard Chartier (US) and Ivan Pavlov (aka COH) (RUS). A certain humor shapes the conceptual dialectics of the Chessmachine live experience. Their interplay suggests the historical confrontation of East and West; an austere and chilling tete-a-tete over the chessboard that reconstructs the somber milieu of a bygone Europe, even as it conveys a kind of absurdist levity through the rehearsed performance of these roles. The use of MAC and PC computer operating systems by Chartier and Pavlov, respectively, becomes the late-20th century manifestation of classic Cold War combatants. Through their engagement, a process of sonic and aesthetic displacement unfolds, such that one player’s strategic manipulation of sound begins slowly to affect and then determinatively shape the compositional technique of the other. Chessmachine‘s live performances take place in real time with color coded staging, uniforms, lighting, and video projections designed by Russian-American installation/video artists Evelyn Domnitch and Dmitry Gelfand.
Ivan Pavlov is a former acoustic engineer from Russia, currently resident in Sweden who has been releasing his work under the name Coh (Russian for “sleep” and “dream”) through various record labels including Raster-Noton (DE), Mego (A), Eskaton (UK), souRce-reSearch (UK), IDEA (USA), Wavetrap (UK/SE), Staalplaat (NL) and Error (RU). His work is distinguished by the somewhat emphasized emotional content of the sound forms as well as a certain level of humor in both concepts and execution. He has collaborated with artists Coil, Cylobe, Annie Anxiety, and Richard Chartier.
Richard Chartier, sound/installation artist has created critically acclaimed recordings for labels such as 12k/LINE (USA), Trente Oiseaux (Germany), Spekk (Japan), and Fallt (Ireland), including collaborations with artists Taylor Deupree, William Basinski, COH, and *0 and has appeared on numerous international compilations. His digital minimalist work explores the inter-relationships between the spatial nature of sound, silence, focus, and the act of listening. In 2000 he formed the recording label Line and has since curated its continuing documentation of compositional and installation work by international sound artists and composers exploring the aesthetics of contemporary and digital minimalism. The first release on Line, Chartier’s Series as awarded Honorable Mention in the category of Digital Music by the prestigious Prix Ars Electronica, 2001 (Austria).
