Previously unpublished performance of the internationally renowned dance band Selten Gehörte Musik (on this occasion: Christian Attersee, Gerhard Rühm, Oswald Wiener) at the closing event of the "Literanover" Festival at the Kunstmuseum Hannover, on November 16th, 1980. Close to two hours of very rarely heard dance music, indeed.
First published as a Vinyl-LP in 2011 (Tochnit Aleph TA099) this extraordinary work by Polish conceptual artist Artur Żmijewski is finally available again!
"In 2001 ARTUR ŻMIJEWSKI created the first part of the project "SINGING LESSON" in the Augsburg Evangelical Holy Trinity church in Warsaw. Accompanied by an organ a choir of 'deaf-mute' children sang the "Kyrie" from the "Polish Mass" by Jan Maklakiewicz (1899-1954). Among the cacophony of sounds uttered by them you can hear the words of the confession of faith: "In this holy place, in this holiest place, our voice rises to you and erupts as the sea roars from the deep abyss. O Christ, hear us! O Christ, listen to us!". The second part of the project ("Deaf Bach") was realized in 2002 in St. Thomas Church in Leipzig, in which Johann Sebastian Bach for many years was a cantor and where he was buried. 'Deaf-mute' or severely hearing-impaired children sang Bach's cantata "Herz und Mund und Tat und Leben" (Heart and Lips and Deed and Life)." (from the liner-notes)
"Along with admiration for the efforts of the deaf we feel an uneasiness caused by our deeply hidden aversion towards that which – like cripplehood – was removed from our consciousness: fear of ourselves, which is an inner mold of repulsion projected onto outside phenomena. Żmijewski's works convince us that neither suffering nor different kinds of physical dysfunction or social norms are able to kill the joy of life. The children singing Bach every so often snort with laughter as if they were trying to accustom themselves to the situation in which they found themselves, thus making it "normal". They whoop it up, forgetting the fact that the lesson in which they participate is beyond the social role ascribed to them, that it is an anomaly, a freaky idea. It is also a musical hybrid, a mix of the sounds uttered by the deaf children and the voice of a professional singer, a negation of all the rules, a mixture of the evenly-tempered baroque system and elements of modal and atonal music." (Violetta Sajkiewicz)
Polish artist Artur Żmijewski (born 1966 in Warsaw) is one of the most consistently challenging, provocative and profoundly thoughtful artists working today. He is an author of short video movies and photography exhibitions, which were shown all over the world. Żmijewski does not shy away from putting the generally accepted rules of Political Correctness into question. His works on the mentally and physically handicapped has drawn significant public attention. He appears to be an artist always in constant search of the next modality of artistic expression, ever striving to amplify the impact of his art on its subjects, enlarging its territory beyond its conventional borders. During the 1990s, Żmijewski was a leading force in the realm of critical art, his point of departure being the problems of body and The Other. In 2005 he represented Poland at the 51st Venice Biennale. He exhibited at Documenta 12 (2007), Manifesta 4 (2002), Wattis Institute for Contemporary Art, San Francisco (2005), Kunsthalle, Basel (2005), National Gallery of Art Zacheta, Warsaw (2005), Kunstwerke, Berlin (2004), Museum of Modern Art, New York (2009), Cornerhouse, Manchester (2009) and many more. He was the curator of the Berlin Biennale 2012.

Musique Phénomenale was recorded by Asger Jorn & Jean Dubuffet between December 1960 and March 1961 in Paris, and first published in 1961 as a box containing four 10" records in an edition of 50 copies (+ 6 copies H.C.) by Galleria del Cavallino, Venice. 61 years after its original release this first ever reissue was produced in an edition of 600 copies by Daniel Löwenbrück / Edition Hans Pumpestok, København, in cooperation with Fondation Dubuffet, Paris.
"It's a curious feeling to implement and test a spontaneous form of orchestration with an artist who has such an extremely independent background. It really felt like we were experiencing an event of singular importance and significance. I can't say if this importance was greater than our own personal joy. But I do know that this music illuminated many ideas for me that had previously remained obscure. For me it remains a kind of phenomenal music, in the sense that in our productions the music became it's own specific phenomenon, and yet one that was still connected to all the other sensorial phenomena. Produced and recorded at the WDR Radio in Cologne, Germany, the Akustisches Abreaktionsspiel (Aktion 38b) is "neither a radioplay nor a work of music. it merely portrays the acoustic part of an "abreaktionsspiel" (a play of abreaction). the special and specific usage of the acoustic possibilities are in the foreground, while the visual part of the play is communicated by a narrator." A prime example of the intense & noisy wildness of Nitsch's early actions employing scream-choirs, beating, whistles, chaotic austrian folklore juxtapositions, rough brass sections and dissonant strings. Edition of 400 copies on vinyl and 200 copies on CD.

"Richters Patterns (2016) is a collaboration among Marcus Schmickler, artist Gerhard Richter, director Corinna Belz and the Ensemble Musikfabrik. In 2011, Richter took an image of his work Abstract Painting (CR: 7244) and divided it vertically into strips and gave them to Belz who utilized specially developed software operations involving cuts, mirroring and reproduction to create a movie from these images. Schmickler and Belz worked in parallel, with the film and composition following their own independent logic. Schmickler’s idea was to extend Richter’s method to divide, mirror, repeat into sound and time. Richters Patterns was commissioned by Koeln Musik and had its premiere on September 9, 2016 at Cologne Philharmonic Hall. Marco Blaauw (Trumpet), Helen Bledsoe (Flute), Christine Chapman (Horn), Bruce Collings (Trombone), Diamanda Dramm (Violin), Florentin Ginot (Double Bass), Benjamin Kobler (Piano, Synthesizer), Ulrich Löffler (Piano), Heidi Mockert (Bassoon), Melvyn Poore (Tuba), Axel Porath (Viola), Carl Rosman (Clarinet), Dirk Rothbrust (Percussion), Marieke Schoenmakers (Harp), Peter Veale (Oboe), Hannah Weirich (Violin), Dirk Wietheger (Violoncello), Marcus Schmickler (Computer), Paul Jeukendrupp (Soundprojection).
"Kemp Echoes" (2013) refers to a physical phenomenon in the ear discovered by physicist David Kemp in 1978. Otoacoustic Emissions (OAE) are signals in the ear (that can be detected with high quality small microphones) that are emitted by the cochlea, either spontaneously or in response to stimuli (frequently clicks). I have strived to create a piece that can seem ‘electronic’ to the ear without actually utilizing electronics. With Helen Bledsoe (Flute), Peter Veale (Oboe), Carl Rosman (Clarinet), Heidi Mockert (Bassoon), Christine Chapman (Horn), Ales Klancar (Trumpet), Bruce Collings (Trombone), Melvyn Poore (Tuba), Ulrich Löffler (Synthesizer), Benjamin Kobler (Piano/Sampler), Dirk Rothbrust (Percussion), Thomas Meixner (Percussion), Juditha Haeberlin (Violin), Hannah Weirich (Violin), Axel Porath (Viola), Dirk Wietheger (Violoncello), Benedict Ziervogel (Bass), Marcus Schmickler (Computer), Paul Jeukendrup (Soundprojection). Conducted by Enno Poppe.
"Fokker Bifurcations" (2014) marks a departure into microtonal works for keyboards and mallets and maintains the composer’s penchant for juxtaposed fixed pitches with pitch continua. Recorded live at ISSUE Project Room, Brooklyn on Nov 7 2014. The recording has been edited for this publication. With Laura Barger (piano), Ning Yu (piano), Ian Antonio (percussion), Russell Greenberg (percussion).
"E-UROPAS / Plurality of Centers" (2006). Shall we say goodbye to modernism? I dare to confront the myths of new music in this music theater creation. Layers containing the manifestos of Cornelius Cardew, Guy Debord and sound materials from six decades of the avant-garde create a collage that utilizes some of the formal principles guiding John Cage’s Europera V. With Hayden Chisholm (Voice), Juditha Haeberlin (Violin), Axel Porath (Viola), Dirk Wietheger (Violoncello), Ulrich Löffler (Piano), Dirk Rothbrust (Percussion), Marcus Schmickler (Voice, Computer, Radios), Carsten Goertz (scenography).

Edition of 500 copies. 20 page illustrated booklet with liner-notes in German and English. Four political tape compositions 1976-1979 by Swiss composer Max E. Keller (b.1947). A rare case of left-wing / socialist electroacoustic music. The CD includes Keller’s piece from the long out-of-print and sort of legendary Split-LP with Martin Schwarzenlander from 1977 plus 3 previously unreleased tape compositions. Max E. Keller originally started out as one of the first Swiss Free-Jazz musicians in the mid 1960’s and studied composition with Hans Ulrich Lehmann and Helmut Lachenmann, and electronic music with Nicolaus A. Huber und Dirk Reith. In 1972 he was expelled from the Darmstadt International Summer Courses for New Music because of his political stances. “Halber Pogo (half a pogo) is a 60 minute recording in which scripted text-pieces are recited from memory. The selection of the pieces is left up to the moment, as much as how much content of each piece is remembered; along with their actually determined pronounciation - that often buggers off. This inaccuracy, the resulting pauses, the sensuality that arises from these circumstances, is what is of interest to Halber Pogo.”

A Film by Oswald Wiener, Vienna 1965. Austrian artist Domink Steiger (born 1940) as ’a child’. Dressed up in a sailor suit, playing with himself and toys on a roof-top and out in the streets and at a playground with other children under the suspicious eyes of mid 1960’s Vienna inhabitants. This work could be seen as some sort of an (unintended) Steiger-esque version of the "Wiener Spaziergang" action by Günter Brus which coincidently happened the same year in the same city. But this film is not just a documentation of a happening but an experimental film by Oswald Wiener (b.1935), one of the founding members of the ’Wiener Gruppe’. Filmed with a Super 8 camera and edited by hand, with fast cut’s and short bursts of over-exposure. Edition of 100 numbered copies of which 50 copies are available to distributors.
10 years after the first Edition on CD the most horrifying piece of music available again on Vinyl. Featuring the infamous recording ’For Stringquintet and Asstrumpet’ on one side, and a collage of studio-recordings and various live-actions in Rudolf Eb.er’s unique style on side b. Mastered & cut by Lupo at D&M, Berlin. Edition of 500 copies, 320g fullcolour cover true to the original CD, black 180g vinyl, black polylined innersleeve.

He lives and works in Zürich as a composer, installation- and video-artist and plankton fisherman. Gour presents one long composition of his highly fascinating and unique crypto electro-acoustics based solely of micro field-recordings and natural phenomena. “Musique concrete seems eternally old-fashioned and eternally modern. Marc Zeier makes you fall in love with the form all over again”. Thanks Are Due To: The Etang of Gour and its Creatures, A Singing and Cracking Chimney, Wild Bees and Wasps from Piemonte, Limnodromus griseus, Unidentified Voices from the Gemauge House, The Uwaga Squad, The Flies (Sarcophagidae), The Crows and Pigs of Chants, The People of Tiananmen, The Frozen Lakes, The Wolves. Edition of 350 copies.
Edition of 500 copies. Reissue of Rolf Julius’ first and only (and almost impossible to find) LP from 1985.
“Rolf Julius was the archetypal “sound artist”. He painted with sound, he colored with pitch, and his work demands the attention and open-mindedness of those who embrace modern art. He collected found sounds, and mixed them with prerecorded single tone notes which were then, electronically modified and filtered through tiny loudspeakers, transformed into music. Depending on the surface texture where the loudspeaker has been placed - wall, floor or outdoors - these objects resonate and “breathe” sound. His music is a mixture of all these sounds; a carefully calculated and conceived creation. He sculpted sound to define space, creating a musical environment where subtle changes occur.
Julius was born in Wilhelmshaven, West Germany, in 1939 and died in Berlin in 2011. He studied visual arts at the Academy of Fine Arts in Berlin where his first installations involved the use of photographs. Later, after being inspired by the work of John Cage, and more directly European contemporary music (eg: classical, electronic and jazz), Julius became increasingly interested in environmental acoustics and sound textures. He attempted to fuse space with sound by combining pulsating textures with the room’s acoustics, similar to the work of David Behrman, Alvin Lucier and David Tudor. Julius’ environments also contain a visual element, where the observer / participant is able to enter and leave the musical environment as one chooses.
Julius exhibited his pieces throughout Europe and the United States. Paradoxically he is internationally recognized as a visual artist, but considered himself a musician. His work embodies the truest elements of “sound art”, having the ability to create images with sound.” (Brooke Wentz)
(Lauttexte 1962-64 + Hörspiel 1971). Franz Mon (born 1926) is a pioneer in the field of concrete, visual and phonetic poetry. He once licked the new radio play into shape like no other german-speaking playwright before him. As a sound poet and with his ’articulations’ or phonetic pieces, he conceptually renewed sound poetry in the postwar years. This LP collects some of Mon’s earliest concrete phonetic poems recorded 1962-64 as well as the radioplay ’Ich bin der ich bin die’ from 1971. Edition of 400 copies. 320g picture sleeve and 280g printed inner-sleeve, including linernotes and artist biography in english.

Grand Orchestra, for mixed orchestra and bagpipes. Composed and directed by Reinhold Friedl. Performed by zeitkratzer & guest at Haus der Kulturen der Welt, Berlin, August 21, 2011. “The score for Grand Orchestra has been developed for musicians, laymen, old people, children, adolescents, for anyone who likes to join in. Grand Orchestra is not for education. It’s not about explaining, intellectual understanding or the training of cultural values; rather it’s about having faith in the abilities and intuition of the players and their performance. The musicians of zeitkratzer and additional guests took over the voice-leading of the instrumental groups, distributed in the space and enabling their amplification. In this way it was possible to create not only pure intensity but also dense and complex sound aggregates, through the blurring of playing techniques inside the different instrumental groups. Which orchestra is capable of playing such complex sounds as this group of forty wind players, chorally building a simultaneous crescendo of breaths? Who can play more ecstatically and wilder than a group of sixty musicians, playing against and doing their best to keep up with a Scottish bagpipe ensemble? It’s precisely due to unclearly played single sounds, unfolding from an orchestra dominated by amateurs. Unique sounds with a complex character that no professional orchestra could reproduce.” - Reinhold Friedl, from the liner notes. zeitkratzer is sound made visible, tangible, bodily - a truly unforgettable corporal experience of live music. The physicality of sound is celebrated through extended instrumental techniques, mutual understanding and amplification of traditional instruments. A midpoint between instrumental and electronic music turns out to be more bizarre and surprising than either of these. It will make you expect more from music than you did before! zeitkratzer is a soloist ensemble. Its strength comes from its members. Founded in 1999, it gathers nine musicians, light and sound engineers living in different European cities from Amsterdam to London to Oslo meeting for working phases in Berlin. zeitkratzer have performed critically acclaimed versions of classical music by composers such as Karlheinz Stockhausen, Helmut Lachenmann and James Tenney, as well as orchestral versions of electronic/noise music by Whitehouse, Merzbow, John Duncan, Dror Feiler and Lou Reed’s ’Metal Machine Music’.

“The tense relationship between Wiener and Roth, borne by great mutual admiration and argumentative rivalry, left a major mark on the Rarely Heard Music. In 1974 they had a fierce argument in Iceland that almost led to Roth pulling out of his part in the Munich Concert and Berlin Concert. The record that they made together in Iceland some two years later, with their “conversations as songs” (Roth) is thus all the more remarkable. (…) They intentionally recorded it during a hangover. Roth took particular pleasure, he said, in the vacillating nature of the conversation, with music in the background that had been recorded subsequently, when they were both sober again. (…) In the context of their rivalry, however, it is significant that they both struggle to formulate their ideas precisely, and – even when the conversation partner has already understood what was said – they often subsequently offer a yet more succinct version of it. (…)”

This latest addition to the Tochnit Aleph catalogue is premised in a haptic interrogation of each of the label’s previous editions (TA001-147). Berlin-based, and Mexico City-born, multi-disciplinary artist Mario de Vega occupied the gallery space of Rumpsti Pumsti (Musik) for three consecutive days in October 2016 with a hitherto complete Tochnit Aleph catalogue, sanding machines, hammer, and recording equipment. Conflating acts of 'playing' with destruction, de Vega took to the recorded works and assorted medias with his spartan toolset, producing a discordant document of his repurposing of the complete archive. Reducing the material to a collection of detritus for exhibition, the sound object is presented as both a conceptual remainder of the site-specific process, and an agitated extension to the label.
