“Every Color Moving” consists of 6 discs, covering 7 hours of the 15 first years of Steve Roden musical activities. The first 4 discs contain unreleased works and impossible to find small editions. The last 2 discs offer a selection of tracks made for compilations during the same period. From the surprising early experiments to the development of his often imitated but never equalled ‘lowercase’ aesthetic, these are some of Roden’s earliest works, documenting numerous rare and unreleased recordings.
The discs are accompanied with a 32 page booklet with an essay and extended track notes, written by the artist.
Steve Roden (1964-2023) was a visual and sound artist born in Los Angeles. Roden’s work includes painting, drawing, sculpture, film/video, sound installation, and performance. Roden’s earliest musical experience was as the singer of the Los Angeles punk band “Seditionaries” from 1978 - 1982, performing locally with some famous bands from this scene. Roden’s early works moved from loud to quiet in the midst of an emotional crisis at age 18, fueling a shift in his work, with the discovery of Eno’s Obscure label. In the early -1990’s Roden discovered the Broken Music catalog (an encyclopedic survey of records related to visual artists), offering a context for an artistic practice rooted in both visual and sound art.
In 1990 Roden released his first recording on a self-released cassette titled “the secret of happiness” under the artist name “in be tween noise”. Since then, Roden has released 45 solo recordings on various labels, alongside numerous collaborations and compilations. By the late 1990’s Roden began to use his own name as the artist of his solo recordings. Most of Roden’s sound works tend towards using a singular source - such as objects, architectural spaces, field recordings, or texts. These things, become abstracted through humble electronic processes to create new audio spaces, or “possible landscapes”. In 2000, he used the term “lowercase” to describe a music that “bears a certain sense of quiet and humility”. Over the years, he has created a rich and diverse body of work that is uniquely his own, mixing conceptual rigor, experimentation and musicality.

“A thousand breathing forms”, the second boxset of Steve Roden archive works released by Sonoris, is a selection of unreleased or hard to locate works from 2003 to 2008, a very prolific and creative period for the californian artist.
The boxset is centered on his hard-to-describe loop based sound works that are uniquely his own (such as Stars of ice, A Christmas play for Joseph Cornell) but also includes the conceptual “One hour as the bumps of surfaces” and some more musical or instrumental works. “So delicate and strangely made”, the title of one of his very first records, could still be the right description of his sound work, rooted in visual arts and architecture, mixing conceptual rigor and experimentation without neglecting musicality.

“as i listen to the tracks that are compiled here, i realize that for so many times my works have been inspired by the works of others, and other objects. ‘stars of ice’ was inspired by a chinese 7” record salvaged from a thrift store. ‘stills for guru dutt’ came out of my love of discovering my favorite bollywood director, and the en/of record used the sound of the great indian playback singer mohammed rafi. ‘22 letters and the resonance of a three pointed star’ was inspired by an early 1960’s building for the olivetti design firm in ivrea italy, where the original installation was placed within the lobby where it was “modulated” by the space. ‘a christmas play for joseph cornell’ was of course, inspired by the work of joseph cornell, but also george brecht’s water yam scores. the banjo used in banjoharmonium was found at the flea market (my home from home), and the harmonium was a gift from my friend damon. yes, maurice blanchot!, herd and heard - wordplay always. ‘these 4 horizons’ was, again with collaborating with architecture, making recordings in the rain on the site of le corbusier’s roncham after getting lost for hours while trying to find our way through torrential rains (that you can hear on one of these tracks). ‘sleep walk drive’ was a collaboration, also something important to keep one honest. the last track, so tiny, was a cover version of the oldest recorded sound we know, and the story of that not only generated this track, but a sound and video installation… and so i have been collaborating not only with people but with objects, ideas, and forms.” Steve Roden

“Forms of Paper”
Aurora Central Records (Mexico) in conjunction with LINE (US) announce the first-time editions on vinyl and cassette of the important 2001 lowercase work 'Forms of Paper' by Steve Roden. This new version has been lovingly remastered by Taylor Deupree in 2024 from the original recording and features Steve Roden’s artwork on the cover/packaging.
This project, initiated by Aurora Central Records, was supervised under the guidance of his estate and the Steve Roden Studio.
A brief history of the work: ‘Forms of Paper' was originally created by Steve Roden for the art exhibition "Six-Degrees: Art in the Libraries" organized by Side Street Projects in 2001. The exhibition took place in the Hollywood branch of the Los Angeles Public Library designed by Frank Gehry. The work was created with the quiet space of the library as a major consideration, amplified at a very low volume. All the sounds in the composition are made by book pages being handled and turned. ‘Forms of Paper' was originally released by LINE on CD in 2001 and reissued digitally in 2011.

In Steve Roden's onw words: "a few years ago, my mother gave me a small stack of 45s of some of her favorite songs as a kid; chuck berry, the platters, and others. when i began to listen to the records, i was not only excited about the music, but the surface-scuffs from my mother¹s repeated listening over the years of wear and tear.
the source for u.t.r. and o.t.r. is a recording of 'somewhere over the rainbow' by the dimensions.
What you are hearing are the processed sounds of the surface noise at the beginning and end of the record - the first and last notes of the song.
the experience of listening to a vinyl record is not only a durational experience, but a physical experience. when the needle is dropped upon the record at the beginning and picking it up at the end, it is a kind of performance.
in this piece, i wanted to explore the unintentional sounds - to emphasize the 'before-song' and the 'after-song'.
In the final seconds of listening to a 45, when the needle becomes trapped in the repetitive rhythm that is born of a locked groove, these clicks become a process of disintegration. the constant clicks offer a kind of lullaby like the aging process of a human being¹s body and skin as it changes. every time a piece of vinyl is played, new wrinkles, scars, scratches, scrapes, chips, and detritus are created and so here, i wanted to highlight the unintentional soundings caused by handling, to move away from the perfect veneer. The more a record is handled, the more the music is transformed to an entirely different atmosphere - where disturbances and interruptions can overwhelm a song. Listening to the sound of a needle trapped within the final groove of one of my mother's records, i think i must be hearing the exact thing she heard while listening to the same object possibly 10 years before i was born. as the record continues to offer the clicks and nothing else, i imagine my mother falling asleep to one of her favorite songs. there, in her darkened bedroom, she sleeps to the after-sound of the needle stuck in a groove.
As she sleeps, her ears absorb the minimalist rhythmic click, like a lullaby - and as the needle endlessly circles the outer realm of the record label clicking until morning..."

“Oionos”
Notes from Steve Roden on Oionos:
Oionos was created for the exhibition The Grand Promenade, in Athens, Greece.
The exhibition took place in various archaeological and historical sites in central Athens, creating a situation for contemporary site specific works to be in dialogue with their historical surroundings.
While it was not originally offered as a possible site, I pleaded with the curator to allow me to work with architect Dimitris Pikionis’s Church of St. Dimitris Loumbardiardis, about a 10-minute walk from the main path of the Grand Promenade. Pikionis designed the original promenade which is still visible in several areas, but much of the area’s original designs were altered during the “restoration” before the 2004 Olympics. The small path that leads to the church gives a much stronger impression of Pikionis’s vision for the entire promenade as it was; so i wanted to use my work to draw viewers/listeners into his world.
When I first saw the small church it totally took my breath away, and I immediately began to think about a work that could exist in resonance with it — but not distract from it. The church itself is still in use, and I wanted to the work to be gentle and out of the way of the people who worship there. I decided to use the large tree in the front of the church for a hanging work that would a little bit of visual presence as well as sound which could blend with all of the insect noises and the overall quiet of the area.
The audio was built from field recordings and small “poor” objects such as tin whistles, toy harmonicas, and the like. These “instruments” suggested by the museum of musical instruments in Athens, where the proper instruments take up most of the museum, but there is a wonderful display case in the basement with musical toys, religious objects, and other sounding devices not considered musical instruments. I felt that these simple things related to Pikionis’s ideas about architecture and craft, and his interests in indigenous culture in conjunction with intellectual and modern culture. I felt there could be a relationship.

These tracks, which mix conceptual composition and musicality, transcend the ambient or lowercase categories too quickly applied to his music, due to its ghostly beauty.

In the tradition of John Cage's Cartridge music amplified objects, Steve Roden extracts a fine and delicate music through his manipulation of specific objects, with an apparent simplicity that hides a captivating magic. Whilst reinventing a form of ambient music which is discreet and atmospheric, Steve Roden delivers sound textures, gives shape to color swatches, traces vibrant frequencies and creates visual art objects.
Roden, both a visual and a sound artist often tagged as minimal for want of a better description, builds the sound design of a life, a new construction for the future which encompasses architecture, visual arts, and painting in a single form.
• The radio (1996): The sound sources are derived from the object itself: the airwaves as well as the internal mechanics (aerial,springs, knobs ...). Originally released as a miniCD by Sonoris, this work centered on Roden's voice and found sound loops is now unexpectedly considered a classic and was seen as "a particularly modest form of genius" in a review by The Wire at the time.
• Airria ( hanging garden ) (2003): Arnold Schönberg's work " The book of hanging gardens " haunts the piece, and is used as a backbone over which a ghostly and exhilarating vocal hovers. Both unsettling and relaxing, this track from the "Speak no more about the leaves" CD has strangely become a mini phenomenon on youtube with its number of views and comments.
• Vein stem is calm (1996): A few seconds taken from a Ralf Wehowsky piece are shaped into a nocturnal raga imbued with substances of an indeterminate nature.

“… i listen to the wind that obliterates my traces brings together a collection of early photographs related to music, a group of 78rpm recordings, and short excerpts from various literary sources that are contemporary with the sound and images. It is a somewhat intuitive gathering, culled from artist Steve Roden’s collection of thousands of vernacular photographs related to music, sound, and listening. The subjects range from the PT Barnum-esque Professor McRea - “Ontario’s Musical Wonder” (pictured with his complex sculptural one man band contraption) - to anonymous African-American guitar players and images of early phonographs. The images range from professional portraits to ethereal, accidental, double exposures - and include a range of photographic print processes, such as tintypes, ambrotypes, cdvs, cabinet cards, real photo postcards, albumen prints, and turn-of-the-century snapshots. The two CDs bring together a variety of recordings, including one-off amateur recordings, regular commercial releases, and early sound effects records. there is no narrative structure to the book, but the collision of literary quotes (Hamsun, Lagarkvist, Wordsworth, Nabakov, etc.). Recordings and images conspire towards a consistent mood that is anchored by the book’s title, which binds such disparate things as an early recording of an American cowboy ballad, a poem by a Swedish Nobel laureate, a recording of crickets created artificially, and an image of an itinerant anonymous woman sitting in a field, playing a guitar. The book also contains an essay by Roden.”

"gradual small fires (and a bowl of resonant milk), was commissioned by the university of hong kong’s new media school, and more specifically, the work was created initially for daniel libeskind’s building for the university’s cmc (creative media center). for the grand opening of the building, several sound and new media artists were invited to create works on site.
the work consisted of 5 different pieces – each object constructed of plexiglass, and each sound work anchored by a recording of a fire that i had made in denmark 10 years or so ago. i added sounds (such as bells, rocks, guitar, field recordings), and everything was manipulated, for the most part with analog guitar pedals.
each sound/sculpture was placed in a discreet location, generally a space that seemed to have no use. the pieces were relatively quiet, and the hope was that a student or visitor would happen upon these works accidentally, and that the piece would then offer a diversion.
my goal was to complete a piece for every photo in ruscha’s book.
along with the five works exhibited at the cmc in hong kong, a 6th piece, gradual small fire 5, was commissioned for the exhibition “sound art. sound as a medium of art” at the zkm in karlsruhe."

“Three roots carved to look like stones”
Special price. “This work was originally installed at inmo gallery in chinatown los angeles, december 2000. The piece was created using 3 objects purchased at chinatown giftshops as source material: a wooden toy flute, a small aluminum wind chime, and a small paper accordion. Each track used one of these objects as the only sound source. The installation was installed in front of a large picture window facing the chinatown pedestrian area.”

“Small songs for Kack Jirby began in 2014, when i stopped performing with the tools I had used since 1993 (pedals, contact mics, cassettes, etc.). As I was trying to find a way to some “new” tools, various friends had suggested I work with a modular synthesizer. At the time, I didn’t know anything about the modular, but it offered me the thing I wanted - something I didn’t understand, and to begin again as a musical child. Instead of working for several years to master the instrument I simply tried to work with the materials, while trying to make something that had the “feel” of my work. The recordings on small songs for kack jirby come from the very first months when myself and the machine tried very hard to become friends - and it seemed that after years of working in a specific mode, these first steps with a new instrument along with a new sound pallette should be documented, and so, these little pieces are the beginning of a new phase of my work. (Also, the name “Kack Jirby” is a play on the name of my favorite childhood comic book artist - Jack Kirby).” Steve Roden.
