Pali MEURSAULT
“{ Press }”

Universinternational & Artkillart — Ui024 + AKA16 Press completes a “mechanist” trilogy, started by Pali Meursault with Offset in 2013 and Mécanes in 2016. Following the investigation of gestures and machines cycles in printing and letterpress workshops, this new work is a mise en abyme of the record as an object, created from field recordings of a vinyl record pressing plant: Rand Muzik in Leipzig. Composed in the studios of GRM, Press is a piece of industrial musique concrète. The microphonic explorations of factory noises, as “byproducts” of the fabrication process, reveal the pulsations, rhythms, frequencies and sequences of an electroacoustic matter that seem to be already pointing to industrial and electronic music. Noise is apprehended as a social and cultural phenomenon, which attests of both a production process and an auditory culture. The piece fills the first side of the record with three “movements” that correspond to the three main stages of the record fabrication: electrotyping, pressing, and packaging. The second side is a deconstruction of the first one, presenting 33 locked groves. The medium conditions the shape of sound by imposing the never-ending repetition of the 1.8 seconds in take to complete a rotation. Sound matter recorded in the R.A.N.D. muzik pressing plant in Leipzig. Music composed in the studios of GRM in Paris. Lacquer cut at DK Mastering by Hervé de Kéroullas. Thanks to François Bonnet, Jan Freund, and Víctor Mazón Gardoqui. Limited edition of 300 copies.

Pali MEURSAULT
“Stridulations”

Pali Meursault is a sound artist, composer and sound designer. His electroacoustic and sound art research takes different shapes: compositions for records, radio works, installations or performances. Environmental sound recording is central in his work, which takes from Musique Concrète and the sonic exploration of soundscapes. For stridulations, Meursault confronts recorded and performed sounds, composition and improvisation: field-recordings of animal communication (insects, birds and bats recorded in France, Japan and South America over almost ten years) mix and dialog with the ‘sonification’ of fluorescents tubes. Both the environmental sound matter composition and the electromagnetic instrument have evolved with performances between 2014 and 2017. Little by little, new recordings were collected and new electrical and electronic supplies were added to the setup. The record is altogether the outcome of that process and a different take on the project, leaving the synesthetics of the flickering lights but embracing the deepness of ‘blind’ listening. For Pali Meursault, the long research for stridulations has been a practice for deconstructing binary oppositions between nature and machine, bio- and anthropo-phony, and instead to explore the strange sonic affinities that exist between some animal voices and technological phenomena. The performances were a way of switching from a contemplative and ideologic relation to the soundscape to a praxis of noise, using animals and electromagnetic sounds as sonic qualities, possibilities, and intensities. Mastered and Cut by Rashad Becker.

Pali MEURSAULT
“Mécanes”

Commissioned by GRM, < Mécanes > brings further the “machinic” research pali meursault had started with Offset. This time, sound matter was recorded in a letter-pressing workshop. With the help of the artisans, and on the pretext of printing the text insert of the record, it as possible to bring the microphones even closer to the mechanics, to the machines as a musical instrument. Side A focuses on the delicate handcrafting, while on side B it's the energy of the presses that is setting the pace. Sounds were collected with the welcome and support of atelier m.u.r.r., the piece was first created in january of 2016 at GR’'s “Festival Multiphonies”.

Pali MEURSAULT
“Offset”

From the label : “offset is the exploration of the soundscape of a printing workshop, a journey in the depth of the mechanical and industrial energy of rotary presses. Composed from field recordings made in two different printing facilities (in Grenoble and Paris from november 2011 to february 2012), the work is deliberately situated in between the sound document about the over-determined environment of a work place and the electroacoustic re-composition/manipulation. A series of variations on textures, rhythms, cycles and patterns formed by the producing and reproducing machines. Here, the soundscape is regarded as a social and cultural phenomenon as much as it is acoustic: the recorded matter is both the damaging and alienating by-product of the production process, and already holds a musical dimension, marked by a hundred years of mechanical fantasies, as cultivated by the Futurists, industrial music or techno. The issue, then, was to study how the noise of a machine becomes music as much as it was to understand how a musical culture produces an alternative listening of the environment. The first side of offset explores the rhythmic patterns of mechanical “cycles”; the second focuses on “fluxes” and continuous phenomena. Co-realised by universinternational and doubtful sounds. Black vinyl, limited to 300 copies. Mastering by Giuseppe Ielasi.”
From the artist : “This work is the result of a research about the mechanical sounds of printing machines. I was invited in two different printing workshops in Grenoble and Paris, where I’ve been listening and recording their rotary presses very closely. ’offset’ gathers a series of compositions created with this sound matter, electroacoustic variations exploring the rhythms, cycles, textures and musicality of the machines. A work that stands on the ambivalence between the alienating and the musical machine, and careful to lose any assumption…”

Pali MEURSAULT
“(ÉCHOS)”

Recorded and edited by par Pali Meursault inside the Faï valley with artists from Échos festival 2016 : Bear Bones, Lay Low, Jean Bender, Pôm Bouvier B, Joaquim Brissaud, Clara De Asís & Laura Vazquez, Golem Mécanique, Homnimal, Piotr Kurek, Stephen O'Malley, Léo Maurel & Julien Desailly, Sourdure, Thomas Tilly. (ÉCHOS) is not a documentation about a festival, it is not a compilation or a remix album. And yet some of these things and more are infusing through the 15 tracks of the record. But mostly, (ÉCHOS) is the interpretation of a place and moment in sounds, an essay in alpine electroacoustics. The proposal made to pali meursault was both very clear and a bit vague: recording a place, the context of a festival and the music made by 14 artists, in order to recompose an original creation. With, for reassurance, a formal request addressed to all: “would you agree to have your music captured, appropriated, revisited, re-interpreted, maybe even betrayed?” If such a thing was possible and had any meaning at all, it would be because of the place: the valley of Faï and the giant horn speakers that had been set up there 20 years before to echo against the cliff on the other side. Invited the previous year, pali knew that playing there implied to let go of sounds (more than usual). To hear them - to almost look at them - disappear into the mountain and come back transformed: a few seconds' echo and already they belong to the valley.

Brunhild FERRARI – Eiko ISHIBASHI – Jim O’ROURKE
“L’Oreille Voleuse”

Persistence of Sound releases a new work by Brunhild Ferrari called »L’oreille Voleuse« (The Thieving Ear). The LP features an extraordinary live reinterpretation by Eiko Ishibashi and Jim O’Rourke, recorded in October 2025 in Paris. “No, without listening at doors, the ear captures noises here and there and unexpected sounds without choice, but remains attentive to the messages of each one picked up over the years. It gathers surprises and impressions, bringing them together in a simple mix. In waking up these ear memories again, which were mostly recorded on magnetic tapes, I am very happy about the collaboration of Eiko Ishibashi and Jim O'Rourke in playing on this mix tape.” Brunhild Ferrari

FRANCE
“Good Thoughts, Bad Thoughts”

Good Thoughts, Bad Thoughts captures the band in full flight during their very first English tour, recorded at The state51 Factory in East London. Until this tour, UK audiences had only witnessed France once before, at Liverpool Psych Fest some years back. This album documents what they've been missing. For this performance, the lineup featured Jérémie Sauvage on bass, Yann Gourdon on electrified hurdy-gurdy, and Cyril Bondi (La Tène, Cyril Cyril) stepping in on drums while longtime member Mathieu Tilly took a well-earned break.

Thomas TILLY
“Birds measuring space”

As a counterpoint to discourses about sound in nature, french sound artist Thomas Tilly continues his research on the use of noise by non humans. Following the noise walls of Codex Amphibia, Birds measuring space focuses on the strange rituals operating by the mysterious Guacharos de Cuevas, and its interpretation by humans and technology. Thomas Tilly (FR) is a sound artist and composer of experimental music. His work is based on field experiments using microphones, loudspeakers, and acoustic analysis instruments. Developing a unique approach to phonography, influenced by biology, anthropology, and sound measurement, his creations, broadcasts, and installations open up a field of listening that extends beyond the naturalist paradigm.
