Hermann Nitsch’s String Quartet No.2 in six movements for 2 violins, viola, and violoncello, transcribed by Michael Mautner and performed by the Viennese Koehne Quartet. Recorded during the exhibition NITSCH. Spaces of Color at the ALBERTINA Museum, Vienna on the 29th May 2019.
The Koehne Quartet: Joanna Lewis – 1. Violine, Anne Harvey-Nagl – 2. Violine, Lena Fankhauser – Viola, Mara Achleitner – Violoncello.
Hermann Nitsch does not write his music in regular musical notation, but divides the individual movements into time segments of one minute duration and precisely defines sound events, durations, dynamics and actions with words or signs. His instructions are e.g.: deep sound, whole tone cluster, D minor, F major or noise.
For the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the legendary Machine Gun recordings at the Lila Eule in Bremen, Peter Brötzmann put together a trio with the Berlin pianist, composer Alexander von Schlippenbach and the percussionist Han Bennink, who already sat on the drums 50 years ago. They were so pleased with the music ,that they decided to release it and continue to play gigs as the trio.
Recorded live at Lila Eule, Bremen on 26.5.2018
Press: It might be 50 years since Machine Gun was released, but these three legends prove that they can continue in the same extravagant path, always leave behind gems from these explorations.- Spyros Stasis, Invisible Oranges
for sheer energy and excitement Fifty Years After is a great aural ride that can hardly be equalled or topped. - Ken Waxman, Jazzword
They created a stellar performance that ranks with that classic album in terms of intensity, but also displays all of the hard won knowledge and wisdom that fifty years in the musical trenches can instill.- Tim Niland, Jazzandblues
Powerful saxophone textures from Luca T. Mai of the mighty ZU. On this debut album he is placing his probing and powerful saxophone artistry from energetic sound scapes to celestial layered drones. A stunning solo piece of work, immersive and deep.
Tashi Dorji (electric guitar) and Tyler Damon (drums/percussion) have developed a musical language that is not only shaped by original forms as free jazz, metal, rock and Buddhist monastic music. Their sound merges passion and emotions of literature, art, cultural movements, politics - flashes of ecstatic intensity, blurred timbral lines, fractal repetition, noir-ish, cinematic mystery and inclinations toward free play hint that the two are pleased to follow a winding path to destinations yet unknown.
Keiji Haino – Guitar, Voice, Flute, Taepyeongso
Aaron Turner – Guitar, Nick Yacyshyn – Drums, Brian Cook – Bass.
Post-metal sludge avantgarde powerhouse SUMAC around Aaron Turner (Isis, Old Man Gloom) follow up their collaboration with legendary Japanese guitarist and singer/performer Keiji Haino on Thrill Jockey (American Dollar Bill – Keep Facing Sideways, You are too Hideous to Look at Face on) with another monolith - heavy and experimental at the same time.
Press: "four sprawling tracks of ominous, atmospheric music that ranges from eerily dissonant to noisily disturbing. That it came out of an improvised jam is exciting; that it’s born of Sumac joining forces with one of psychedelic music’s weirder minds is just awesome." -Kerrang mag

THE LAST DREAM OF THE MORNING is the new band from three UK masters of contemporary improvised music – they released a trio cd under this title on Relativ Pitch (NYC) in 2017, now choosing it for their bandname for continuing activities.
Recorded live at Cafe Oto, August 2018
Press: This is a very worthwhile record that I've listened to repeatedly since it's release. If you haven't heard their debut it's also very much worth picking up as well if you enjoy this one. All of the best qualities of the musicians involved are fully demonstrated throughout, never a lag, never a misstep, and never a dull moment. I look forward to more releases from this finely tuned, explosive trio. Really great music, highly recommended. - Nick Metzger, FreeJazzBlog

New York based producer Marc Urselli had the idea to bring people together who had never met before and let that meeting of minds create beautiful soundscapes. Film director and musician Jim Jarmusch, Sonic Youth co-founder and guitarist Lee Ranaldo shared space with versatile drummer Balázs Pándi for a night session at Urselli's EastSide Sound studio in downtown NY.
These are the unfiltered results. Absorbing instrumental patterns of cinematic sounds and improvised rhythms. No overdubs, no editing. All was recorded live and analog, produced and mixed by Marc Urselli. The front/back coverfotos were taken by photographer William Semeraro in Norway. That is why Marc Urselli gave all the songs titles inspired by Norwegian mythology.

Italian composer and bassplayer Massimo Pupillo (ZU) and Australian drummer Tony Buck (The Necks) colloborate in a beautifully haunting, absorbing ambient set, taking in electronic abstraction and free improvisation.
Pupillo and Buck are well known for their work with their long-running bands, as well as for their collaborations with musicians of the current international avantgarde scene - Pupillo released for instance with Cindytalk, FM Einheit, Ambarchi, Corsano; Buck with Fennesz, Branford Marsalis and Magda Mayas.
In TIME BEING / UNSEEN we see the duo turn toward experimentation which floats between uncanny percussion sounds underlined with heaving subs, sealed in deep and noisy atmospheres.

Recorded in 2012, Musik der 135.Aktion Kuba captures the controversial performance from Herman Nitsch's Orgien Mysterien Theater (Orgies Mysteries Theatre) as part of the Havana Biennial art exhibition. For more than fifty years Nitsch has been an influential and striking figure of Austrian art - In his Orgien Mysterien Theater he uses actors, blood, animal bodies and entrails, fruits, symbolic crucifixion, music, processions and ritualistic gestures to enact a new form of Gesamtkunstwerk: pagan ceremonies that aim to a kind of collective catharsis. "Dionysos gegen den Gekreuzigten" (Dinoysus against Christ Crucified") was performed by 150 musicians and 30 actors, including the University's Symphony Orchestra ISA and the artist himself, celebrating Afro-Cuban rituals and ceremonies.
Dan Phillips: Guitar. Mars Williams: Saxophones and Percussion. Jeb Bishop: Trombone. Krzysztof Pabian: Double Bass. Hamid Drake: Drums.

"Three great jazz masters are demonstrating their best abilities of improvising - This album is a great occassion to hear a marvelous record of three great stars of avant-garde jazz" – Avantscena, 2018.
"True to their name they play like a force of nature, something substantial to be reckoned with akin to an aural tsunami - A decidedly enjoyable listen, I recommend it at maximum volume." - Nick Metzger, Free Jazz Blog, 2018
"The speed that the sound is presenting is astonishing, with gales of saxophone, notes of bass that become a blur and lightning fast drumming- The music is more than raw noise however, there is depth and breadth to it and it exists in three dimensions plus time, enveloping the stage with its relentless power and glory" – Jazz´n´Blues Blogspot, 2018
Peter Brötzmann, b-flat/bass/contra-alto clarinet, alto/tenor/bass saxophone. Heather Leigh, pedal steel guitar.
There is complexity in simplicity, and Sparrow Nights is Peter Brötzmann and Heather Leigh's most enduring record to date, and their first studio album. A series of emotionally rich and boldly elucidated tonal and timbral exchanges played like compositions on pedal steel and reeds, the tracks (released as a 6 track LP and 10 track CD) are cold-forged minimalist blues motifs dragged from instrumental laments.
After three years playing together Brötzmann/Leigh's connection and understanding is by now both cerebral and deeply invested in the physical and sensory possibilities of their combined sound, while retaining a melancholic distance. Within this duo there is fluidity – neither is the anchor – and these recordings sound with as much variety as the sea. At times Sparrow Nights carries the clarity and poeticism of still water and open horizon ("This Word Love"), and at others it contains the elemental and ferocious roar of white water breakers on black rocks ("This Time Around").
On their previous three live albums (Ears Are Filled With Wonder, Sex Tape, Crowmoon) the duo have developed an intimate and intense language that manifests here as a focus on power and control, where figures blasted of unnecessary decoration are drawn from the shadows and smoke of collapse. The studio setting also allows Brötzmann to bring a broader range of reeds than in live scenarios: where previously he has played primarily tenor, clarinet and tarogato with Leigh, here he delivers the heat of alto and the low pressure of bass saxophone and clarinet.
Brötzmann's duo with Leigh continues to trace a fresh new arc in his trajectory, and this release also falls at a time when Leigh releases Throne, her most song-based record to date. Here as a studio duo they play a new-old blues for times of complexity, noise and chaos, continuing to redefine and re-sound possibilities for improvised music.
Recording and mastering by Martin Siewert. Artwork by Peter Brötzmann.

MOPCUT is a medium-length noise-style that covers the head and ears with a vertical bang and a horizontal wave. It's a popular style for all ages, genders and generations. The soundscape should be trimmed evenly all around the circumference so that the noise at the front reaches the inner eye while the waves on the sides cover (or almost fully cover) the ears. The beats at the back maintain the same length as the samples at the front and sides. Once the overall sound is achieved, trimming is used to achieve minimalism or maximalism, depending. Improvisation, noise and electronic beats work well as backgrounds for the MOPCUT. Electronic appliances and devices may be used to give the MOPCUT a bit more volume, but effects may lead to standing up instead of hanging low. (Lukas König)

Elisabeth Harnik: piano. Joëlle Léandre: double bass. Liner-notes by Ken Vandermark. Recorded by ORF (austrian broadcasting corp), in concert at WIST, Graz, Austria on april 16th 2016. “The importance of the music of Elisabeth Harnik and Joëlle Léandre, both in tandem and in other circumstances, also has further resonance and significance in a broader social context. Consider the amount of time they have worked relentlessly in the often male dominated fields of jazz and new, experimental, and improvised music. As we close in on the second decade of the 21st century, it is still clear that we are living in a far from equitable world. To face that discrepancy as an artist for decade after decade, often under the gaze of outright hostility, is something that needs to be identified. […] I can’t ask more of a musician, a visual artist, a writer, a filmmaker, a choreographer, a dramaturge, a photographer, a architect, a designer, of an artist, than to contribute creatively and with generous passion despite ongoing adversity. Without question, with this album and with their careers, Elisabeth Harnik and Joëlle Léandre have done so. One of the definitions of the word “tender” is “humane.” Is there a better way to identify and celebrate their work, the gift of it to all of us, than to call it humane music?” Ken Vandermark, Chicago, January 21, 2018

DEK is a new improvised music trio that features Austrians Elisabeth Harnik (piano) and Didi Kern (drums), and American Ken Vandermark (reeds), who have been performing together since September of 2014, both in Europe and in the United States. 2016 has been an exciting year for the band- in January they were featured as part of Vandermark’s residency at the Stone in New York City, 2017 will bring them on tour in Europe.
Their music has a wide range of influences, coming from sources based in Harnik’s work as an internationally acclaimed new music composer, Kern’s profile on European rock scene, and Vandermark’s two decades of work at both home and abroad, touring, recording, and collaborating with dozens of world renowned musicians as diverse as Getachew Mekuria and John Tilbury. The end result of these backgrounds and the open ended musical curiosity of the group is an extraordinary group aesthetic, inclusive and expressive and instantaneous.

Heather Leigh: pedal steel guitar. Peter Brötzmann: tenor saxophone, bass and b-flat-clarinet, tarogato. Recorded nov 8th, 2015 in Krakow, Poland.
A duo variation that suddenly happened in 2015 and led to thrilling performances. Both artists were very pleased with the cooperation and continue to work and tour!
“Ears Are Filled With Wonder, the debut release from the duo of pedal steel player Heather Leigh and reedist Peter Brötzmann, blows the old adage about improvised music somehow not being best appreciated via the recordings to beautiful pieces. This is a music that demands re-visiting, that seems to alter, slightly, every time it is played, with new details emerging, new relationships of tone and style, new romance, even. Recorded during a mammoth stint in Krakow, Poland where Brötzmann and Leigh played as part of big bands, trios, quartets and duos, this duo performance represents the diamond heart of the sessions, an improvised set that bears little relation to what either of the players have achieved outside of its prodigious gravity.
We mentioned romance and really Ears Are Filled With Wonder, a play on a line from the poet Kenneth Patchen, showcases the full reach of Brötzmann’s rebel lyricism, his lover man style, now smoky, seductive, late night, now roaring and vibrating with energy. Leigh plays it extremely subtly, sometimes fixing on the most suggestive detail and from there spinning luscious webs of repeat-time bliss that make for some of the most psychedelic and otherworldly settings of strings and horn. Elsewhere the two of them tear the roof off with tactile fuzz and horn ascensions.
It’s a music of organic depth, of endlessly evocative unfolding, as themes bloom and sigh and disappear and arise and it feels curiously out of time, even as both players push their instruments into futuristic configurations. As such it doesn’t sit neatly in either players’ extensive catalogues. Rather, this is a music of perpetual change, of summing up and of pushing on, a music that feels genuinely new even as it runs an umbilical deep into the tradition of getting out. Indeed, even Brötzmann’s signature artwork and sleeve design seems to have mutated in turn, forsaking the blacks and whites and reds of old, the stark iconography of previous releases, for something more subtly evocative and colourful.
Ears Are Filled With Wonder is a coming together of two of the most original voices on their respective instruments and the title reflects the joyful uncovering of a whole new way of listening and relating. Indeed, it might well be the first ever freely improvised electric pedal steel and saxophone duet ever put to tape. Either way it is one of the most startlingly beautiful combinations of players and temperaments to orbit the European jazz scene in years. And this is only the beginning. So hold tight”.
