Line is pleased to announce its latest edition featuring astoundingly detailed audio/visual works by six internationally recognized artists: Evelina Domnitch + Dmitry Gelfand, COH, Paul Prudence, Francisco López, and Asmus Tietchens.
The fluidity and even the granularity of light can be unfolded by the senses through active attunement coupled with meticulously orchestrated conditions. Though formerly considered impossible to imagine, let alone perceive, recently, a variety of quantum behavior
has been observed on macroscopic scales, from colloidal liquids to biological systems. Liquified Sky documents a series of artworks that pierce this slippery, mesoscopic threshold, departing from the antiquated cult of the illusory, solid-state image.
1. “Mucilaginous Omniverse, part 1”, installation & video documentation: Evelina Domnitch & Dmitry Gelfand / sound: COH.
2. “Mucilaginous Omniverse, part 2”, installation, video documentation & sound: Evelina Domnitch & Dmitry Gelfand.
3. “Hydro Acoustic Study”, video: Paul Prudence / sound: Francisco López.
4. “Memory Vapor”, installation & video documentation: Evelina Domnitch & Dmitry Gelfand / sound: Asmus Tietchens.
The sensorial demands of processing quantum behavior incite adaptive resonances, comprising a multidimensional perceptual navigator. Though brains have been compared to clocks, telegraphs, computers and holograms, they are “not like any artificial machine. If anything, they are like natural self-organizing processes such as stars and hurricanes.” [W. Freeman, Neurodynamics: An Exploration in Mesoscopic Brain Dynamics] Occurring on many different scales of time and space, cascades of standing and traveling waves outline the adaptively resonating lattice of intercellular communication. These resonances can be finely tuned through a mesoscopic self-observation system, which translates quantum harmonic pattern, phase and amplitude recognition across the cerebrospinal sea of neuromodulators.
Due to the detailed nature of these works, this edition is a data DVD containing high resolution audio-visual files. To ensure proper playback, these files will need to be transferred from the data dvd to a hard drive. They can then be viewed in a variety of programs including Itunes and Quicktime.

“Edition of 600. Line is proud to present Live in Los Angeles by the collaborative performance project Chessmachine by Richard Chartier (US) and Ivan Pavlov (aka COH) (RUS). A certain humor shapes the conceptual dialectics of the Chessmachine live experience. Their interplay suggests the historical confrontation of East and West; an austere and chilling tete-a-tete over the chessboard that reconstructs the somber milieu of a bygone Europe, even as it conveys a kind of absurdist levity through the rehearsed performance of these roles. The use of MAC and PC computer operating systems by Chartier and Pavlov, respectively, becomes the late-20th century manifestation of classic Cold War combatants. Through their engagement, a process of sonic and aesthetic displacement unfolds, such that one player’s strategic manipulation of sound begins slowly to affect and then determinatively shape the compositional technique of the other. Chessmachine‘s live performances take place in real time with color coded staging, uniforms, lighting, and video projections designed by Russian-American installation/video artists Evelyn Domnitch and Dmitry Gelfand.
Ivan Pavlov is a former acoustic engineer from Russia, currently resident in Sweden who has been releasing his work under the name Coh (Russian for “sleep” and “dream”) through various record labels including Raster-Noton (DE), Mego (A), Eskaton (UK), souRce-reSearch (UK), IDEA (USA), Wavetrap (UK/SE), Staalplaat (NL) and Error (RU). His work is distinguished by the somewhat emphasized emotional content of the sound forms as well as a certain level of humor in both concepts and execution. He has collaborated with artists Coil, Cylobe, Annie Anxiety, and Richard Chartier.
Richard Chartier, sound/installation artist has created critically acclaimed recordings for labels such as 12k/LINE (USA), Trente Oiseaux (Germany), Spekk (Japan), and Fallt (Ireland), including collaborations with artists Taylor Deupree, William Basinski, COH, and *0 and has appeared on numerous international compilations. His digital minimalist work explores the inter-relationships between the spatial nature of sound, silence, focus, and the act of listening. In 2000 he formed the recording label Line and has since curated its continuing documentation of compositional and installation work by international sound artists and composers exploring the aesthetics of contemporary and digital minimalism. The first release on Line, Chartier’s Series as awarded Honorable Mention in the category of Digital Music by the prestigious Prix Ars Electronica, 2001 (Austria). The video element of the live Chessmachine performance was created by Russian/American video and installation artists Evelina Domnitch + Dmitry Gelfand.” label info
November 2014. Edition of 500.
Suite Nuit was originally commissioned for the 2004 Suite In Parochial festival (a project of Singuhr) in Berlin, Germany, and is the first collaboration between Frank Bretschneider and Steve Roden. Suite Nuit was presented as part of a series of site specific collaborations between sound artists, musicians and video artists who were encouraged to address the unique sonic, visual, and cultural contexts of the Parochial Church of Berlin Mitte.
This edition includes two long-lost live recordings of the collaborative performance and rehearsal and is co-presented by Line and Volume. Recorded live at the tower hall of the Parochial Church (Berlin, Germany) August 26, 2004.
Bretschneider: Micro Modular. Roden: guitar pedals, field recordings, contact microphones, and found objects.
Frank Bretschneider is a musician, composer and video artist in Berlin. His work is known for precise sound placement, complex, interwoven rhythm structures and its minimal, flowing approach. Bretschneider’s subtle and detailed music is echoed by his visuals: perfect translated realizations of the qualities found in music within visual phenomena.
Bretschneider (1956) was raised in Karl-Marx-Stadt (Chemnitz since 1990), where his aesthetic developed as he listened to pirate radio and smuggled Beastie Boys tapes in the former East Germany. After studying fine arts and inspired by science fiction radio plays and films he began experimenting with tape machines, synthesizers, and modified guitars in 1984, as well as exploring the possibilities of exchange between visual art and music by various means such as film, video and computer graphics.
In 1986, after establishing his cassette label klangFarBe, Bretschneider founded AG Geige, a successful and influential East German underground band. Though limited to the East before the wall came down, they were invited to perform across Germany and internationally after 1989 and released three albums before splitting in 1993.
In 1995, Bretschneider and fellow AG Geige member Olaf Bender founded the Rastermusic record label which eventually merged with Carsten Nicolai’s noton to form raster-noton in 1999.
Steve Roden is a visual and sound artist from Los Angeles, living in Pasadena. His work includes painting, drawing, sculpture, film/video, sound installation, text and performance. Roden’s working process uses various forms of specific notation (words, musical scores, maps, etc.) and translates them through self-invented systems into scores, which then influence the process of painting, drawing, sculpture, and composition. These scores, rigid in terms of their parameters and rules, are also full of holes for intuitive decisions, failures and left turns.
The inspirational source material becomes a kind of formal skeleton that the abstract finished works are built upon. In the visual works, translations of information such as text and maps, become rules and systems for generating visual actions such as color choices, number of elements, amounts of time and form building. In the sound works, singular source materials such as objects, architectural spaces, and field recordings, are abstracted through humble electronic processes to create new audio spaces, or possible landscapes. The sound works present themselves with an aesthetic Roden has described as lower case -sound concerned with subtlety and the quiet activity of listening.
“A new album by Asmus Tietchens can be quite an intimidating prospect. The Hamburg-based acoustics professor has been investigating the inner and outer realms of electronic sound production since the mid-sixties. He makes no concessions to mass marketing: the ‘press release’ for this disc simply features a quote, in German, from everyone’s favourite Romanian misanthropist philosopher, Emile Cioran, taken from a withering critique of French culture and high gastronomy. But you can forget about all that once you put the disc on and immerse yourself in the delicate, ethereal sounds that unfurl like wisps of light-reflecting dust. The otherworldy tones and subtle dynamics here are rich in detail and complexity, but the drama is on a microscopic scale, giving that sense of being opened up to a new dimension of musical experience. Some of the weird tonal characteristics Tietchens favours remind me of Alvin Lucier’s ‘I Am Sitting In A Room’ - where a narration is gradually blotted out by the resonant feedback of the room through a process of replaying and re-recording. Tietchens manipulates and arranges his strange resonances to open up a haunting sound world of tones that float eerily amidst watery, metallic glints. The disc’s final track builds into the most expansive composition with a melodic arc surging through the deceptive stillness, suggesting more cosmic dimensions that I can imagine gracing an intense, introspective sci-fi film that’s probably impossible to make.” (normanrecords.com)
