Back in the summer of 2004 Nurse With Wound (Steven Stapleton and Colin Potter) were invited by Kunst I Nordland to visit the Arctic Lofoten Islands for a number of weeks. A small studio was set up in their apartment and their task was to collect sounds from the area and create a series of unexpected radio transmissions that were broadcast on the local radio station over a period of two months. A substantial amount of material was produced and the broadcasts were released as double CDs, the first being Shipwreck Radio Volume 1. This has long been out of print, so we are now re-releasing it in 2 parts on vinyl for the first time, as a deluxe 3 disc spot-varnished boxset with a full colour 2 page insert, with original photographs from the project and new written material. The audio has been carefully remastered for vinyl by Colin Potter.
3LP + 8 page booklet in silkscreen printed linen box.
*One of Romania's most important composers in the last half-century, Octavian Nemescu (1940-2020) is among the few that were not "part of the system", managing to survive and compose in a world that felt more and more "empty", fragile, confused and scarce in prophecies. The mystical approach to his art defines Octavian Nemescu as an essentialist who believed in the power of archetypes in which he found inspiration. His pieces always start from an idea that has spiritual, cosmogonic implications and involves synthesizers, samples from nature and the "ison" (drone) inherent in the spectral current. When defining "meta music" or "imaginary music", Nemescu was an advocate of looking from above, from the top of the mountain. Silence is very important in his work in order to keep the sound flowing and to reflect on the sound from before, as a space, as a pause for thinking. Nemescu put forward another kind of music: a song that has not yet surfaced through human voice, any musical instrument, orchestra or other electro-acoustic means: an intimate, interior, introverted inner sound that focuses on the individual and the imagination. Imaginary music is a reaction, it comes in contrast to the spectacular, it is anti-show. For him, music had a ritualistic function, it served no cultural purpose. This 3LP set collects eight pieces for variable ensemble, tape and electronics, composed between 1968 and 2015, selected together with Erica Nemescu, who also mastered the tracks. Most tracks have been previously released on different CD's but never before on vinyl.
This luxurious pink Cadillac colour box set, “1973-1976-1979” brings back the first 3 albums of Jac Berrocal (Musiq Musik – Paralleles – Catalogue) in which countless personalities of the crossover music of the hexagon participate. 200g vinyl records remastered colorful metal covers, an impressive booklet of photos and unpublished documents come to decorate this numbered and limited edition.
MUSIQ MUSIK
First album of Berrocal, recorded in 1973 with excessives reverberations of the crypt of the church Saint-Savinien in Sens, is a real notebook of sound travels, of instruments reported by jac Berrocal and Roger Ferlet during their numerous journeys : Pakistan, Afghanistan, Nepal, India, Jordan, Iraq, Syria, various instruments: bells, muezzins, conches, shenaïs, cymbals, gongs … embellished with urban and incongruous sounds: horns, whistles, chickens, harmonium and washing machine, the all installed on a kiosk. The idea? Make music together, Jac Berrocal, Roger Ferlet, Dominique Coster.
PARALLELES
1976, Vince Taylor, the Black Archangel of Rock’n’roll, agrees to come and record “Rock’n’Roll Station”, a piece of futuristic clinking of a bicycle wheel. Other sessions contrary to custom, a pigsty with microphones mired in the middle of unruly pigs, towels shaken by Pierre Bastien in the middle of this “bric-a-brac” a noisy piece in homage to Luigi Russolo repertoire reorganized by bonuses and unpublished from the same period.
CATALOGUE
1979, the year of the album Catalogue. Jac Berrocal and his “Marquises of disorder” make the guitars rattle in primrose-sprayed vomit, patchwork of uncontrollable slows, furious accordion (Claude Parle) and martial rocks. Kind of “Micro-cinemas put end-to-end”, a maelstrom of cries and saturation which, paradoxically, an album that is worth the respect of the Punks and the contempt of jazz purists. Berrocal is certainly the only French cousin of New York’s no wave.
