Russell Haswell strikes bone on this 2-track, 20 minute follow-up to the napalm massage of ‘Conceptual nO!se’ for Poland’s Bocian label, and his fearsome split with Pain Jerk for Editions Mego. It also marks his return to the catalytic Diagonal imprint after the deviant blatz of his ‘37 Minute Workout’ LP in early 2014, which was hailed at No.11 in The Quietus albums of the year so far.
‘Double A’ renders Russell at his slyest and most honest, presenting spasmodic, un-edited improvisations belying influence from the pivotal epoch of diamond-cut ‘80s freestyle, industrial and Detroit techno. Depending on your perspective, they’re either splintered, tetchy DJ tools or skeletal nO!se inversions. Either way, they bristle and spark with a compulsive nervous energy and disciplined impulse control that’s Haswell to the core: challenging, uncompromising and bloody crucial.
On the A-side, ‘Foxy’ sparks manic hi-hat chatter and bruxist squall masticated with unpredictable intensity, angled and affective like a box of knock-off fireworks hoyed at the ‘floor. Stand back and watch ‘em scatter.
On the flip, the mercurial sleight-of-hand at play in ‘One Take Dub No Edit’ gestures the hard-ass chops of 12” bonus beats and the show-off breakdown edits of Carlos Berrio or The Latin Rascals. A non-stop, one-shot flashback to a vital time when futurist Latin freestyle and industrial funk were the dancer’s choice.

“Broken Blues”
Reissue of an ultra-limited cdr that popped out quietly on absurd in 2007, this record finds Tetuzi Akiyama and Michel Henritzi joining strengths for a singular set of guitar music recorded at the Alchemy Music Store in Osaka.
Captured during the heyday of stylised and pensive improvisation, the music here breaks protocol by avoiding some of the more polite mannerisms of the genre. What starts as a coarse yet beautiful duet of sparse melodic fragments, soon brings into fold the systematic undoing of the bodies of the two guitars themselves. Putting drills, hammers, nails, screws and saws into good use, and with maximum amplification, the two artists manage to bridge the distance between the freely atonal sketches of post-Derek Bailey guitar music and the Fluxus tradition of more overtly disruptive actions. In the process, they craft a singular work that, through raw tactile means, channels some of the violence and expressiveness that runs deep throughout the long tradition of guitar music.

John Elliott and Andrew Veres have been refining their creative powers as Outer Space since 2010 with “Akashic Record” (Spectrum Spools) and “II” (Blast First Petite). Upon powering, each harddrive moves with its own speed and pattern, as directed by the firmware and mechanical constitution. Electromagnetic emissions picked up as acoustic signal reveal the specific tone of a drive. In various formations, the harddrives perform according to their past usage and current state.
About the artist : Valentina Vuksic (CH - 1974) is a computer artist and programmer living and working in Zürich. She explores an individual articulation of hard- and software mediation. The processes in such intermediate space imply actors rendered audible.

“Wire Drawing”
Working at once on site-specific field recordings, using the microphone as an instrument, and in-studio composition, it took several months of labour for the artist to reach the essential: a thirty-minute piece depicting a typical worker's day, from beginning to end.
Enter and Shelter both reflect the artist's chosen standpoint: in recording the factory's sounds, he gives voice to the voiceless, without having them speak.
The resulting physical displacement conveys political meaning, with the immersion weaving the work into a historicity.
