Even though only being fully terminated 50 years after its conception, ‘Azabu’ can be regarded as the starting point of Michael Ranta’s creative self-discovery. The recordings that form the base of ‘Azabu’ were mostly made in the Tokyo district with the same name (Azabu-Juban). Next to abstracted field recordings ‘Azabu’ is also pervaded by a rich variety of percussion, string and wind instruments, all played by Ranta himself. Subsequently Ranta edited, layered and processed the recordings at the NHK electronic music studio in Tokyo. Both pieces display a vast array of acoustic, electronic and concrete sound events meticulously sequenced to a complex fusion symbolizing the entire spectrum of earthly and heavenly sounds. Dynamic extremes evoke a restless flight through space, or through the depths of human subconsciousness, between dream and reality. Ultimately the music disappears, like a dot in the sky gradually fading into nothingness – an “ascension” that closes the loop in a ritual of life that can begin anew again at any time.

Même s’il n’a été achevé que 50 ans après sa conception, “Azabu” peut être considéré comme le point de départ de la découverte de soi de Michael Ranta. Les enregistrements qui constituent la base d'”Azabu” ont été réalisés pour la plupart dans le quartier de Tokyo du même nom (Azabu-Juban). Outre les enregistrements de terrain abstraits, “Azabu” est également imprégné d’une grande variété de percussions, d’instruments à cordes et à vent, tous joués par Ranta lui-même. Par la suite, Ranta a édité, superposé et traité les enregistrements au studio de musique électronique de la NHK à Tokyo. Les deux pièces présentent un vaste éventail d’événements sonores acoustiques, électroniques et concrets méticuleusement séquencés en une fusion complexe symbolisant l’ensemble du spectre des sons terrestres et célestes. Les extrêmes dynamiques évoquent un vol agité dans l’espace, ou dans les profondeurs du subconscient humain, entre rêve et réalité. Finalement, la musique disparaît, comme un point dans le ciel qui s’estompe progressivement dans le néant – une “ascension” qui boucle la boucle d’un rituel de vie qui peut recommencer à tout moment.
