Seijiro MURAYAMA
“To listen To As far As possible”
Seijiro Murayama is a drummer/percussionist and improviser/composer who lives in Paris. His first CDs on Ftarri's three labels (Hitorri, Ftarri and Meenna) came out in 2009, and he has since released a total of 12 solo, duo, trio and quartet albums on Ftarri labels. Of the solo albums, the first was Downdate (2017), followed by The Empire of Slip of the Tongue (2018) and mi-tai (2020). While Downdate and The Empire of Slip of the Tongue are electro-acoustic works, mi-tai is an album of improvisation with percussion and voice.
This album is Murayama's fourth solo release on the Hitorri label. Like the preceding album, it's a compilation of improvisational performances. The seven tracks (each between 4 and 11 minutes long) were recorded in Ljubljana, Slovenia, in January 2022. Murayama uses instruments including cymbal, bass drum, snare drum, voice, and various small objects. Along with the previous work (mi-tai), this album is an ideal introduction to Murayama's boundlessly original and distinctive work as an improviser.

“mi-tai”
Seijiro Murayama is a drummer/percussionist and improviser/composer living in Paris. Since around 2017 he's focused on creating electro-acoustic works using recordings of his own improvisations. The results of these efforts have been released as two highly praised solo albums from the Hitorri label: Downdate (hitorri-986, 2017) and The Empire of Slip of the Tongue (hitorri-984, 2018). In an about-face from these earlier releases, his new album, Mi-tai, consists of eight improvisational performances on percussion. It's as if Murayama were returning to his point of origin with this release.
Mi-tai is the first of two albums in which Murayama attempts to give a comprehensive account of his improvisation on percussion and drum set--his "principal occupation," so to speak--in this moment in time. This is a chance to experience the amazing creativity that sets Murayama apart from other percussionists/drummers.

“The Empire of Slip of the Tongue”
Percussionist/voice performer Seijiro Murayama previously lived for a long time in France, and he moved back to that country in 2018 after several years back in Japan. His extremely original performances, using a drum set or some parts thereof, have been highly acclaimed in Europe and throughout the world. The two tracks on this CD, which follows Murayama's album Downdate (released on the Hitorri label in November 2017), are solo performances by Murayama using voice, percussion, and sign waves mixed with field recordings. Densely structured and mysterious, this is an overpowering, incomparable masterpiece.

“Downdate”
Seijiro Murayama, a percussionist/drummer currently based in Japan, lived in France for a number of years and has received acclaim in the west for his musicianship. He performs frequently both inside and outside Japan. This is Murayama’s first solo album since “Broken Iteration” was released on the Herbal International label four years ago, in 2013. It consists of two tracks of about 20 minutes and one of about 7 minutes (3 in total). Overlapping and combining with percussion and scraping sounds are electronic sounds, field recordings of sounds like birdsong and flowing water, and vocal sounds. Rich in creativity and fantasy, this is an album that could only have been made by Seijiro Murayama.

“The Japanese percussion player who lives in Europe has three fields of interest: 1, non-idiomatic improvisation (that includes idiomatic researches about it, or workshops on it). 2, electro acoustic composition. 3, plural disciplinary collaboration (with words, images, body movements etc) and it would seem to me that these four pieces here are a combination of 1 and 2. […] Murayama’s playing is very minimal and we do recognize indeed the element of percussion instruments, and Murayama explores his instruments with great care.
It has a fine meditative character this music and it explores in depth the textures of the instruments. Murayama doesn’t use his drum parts as a drum kit, but plays one or two separate elements with brushes, sticks or objects and explores them.” FdW in Vital
