TEXT-SOUNDS COMPOSITIONS. A STOCKHOLM FESTIVAL

Back in stock. “Fylkingen Records in collaboration with the Swedish Radio released a series of LP records with text-sound compositions between the years of 1968-77. All of these were documentations of the international festival Text-Sound Compositions. A Stockholm Festival, which Fylkingen presented in Stockholm several times during these years. Most of the LPs were only pressed in batches of about 400-500 records, and most of the LPs sold out during the festivals. A re-release had long been planned, and this 5 CD box marks the complete re-release of the complete recordings. Apart from the 5 CDs with in all ca 6 hours of material, the CD box contains a 60 page booklet with essays by Teddy Hultberg and Sten Hanson, as well as historical photographs taken by Lütfi Özkök during the festivals.
The term text-sound composition was coined in 1967 in Sweden by the composers/writers Lars-Gunnar Bodin and Bengt Emil Johnsson, and was meant to serve to name a genre that was a vital art form in the no man’s land between sound, poetry, and music. Text-sound compositions had influences from previous modernistic waves such as futurism, dadaism, lettrism, etc., but perhaps the most important influence was the Swedish poet and visual artist Öyvind Fahlström, who had just over a decade earlier coined the term "concrete poetry". The term concrete poetry related to Pierre Schaeffer’s concrete music, and it is somewhere between concrete poetry and concrete music that text-sound compositions appear. The birth of the electronic music studio and concrete music’s idea that every sound can be freed from its original context and given a new meaning when it is reworked and put together with other sounds in the electronic music studio became the catharsis for text-sound composition. In the electronic music studio, voice and language sounds can be broken down, unleashed, and then fused together to become a poetry that had never been heard before. Certain text-sound composers would come to work only with pure lingual sounds, but most eventually came to integrate lingual sounds with other sounds, both concrete and electronic.
The CD box contains works by the following text-sound composers and sound poets: Charles Amirkhanian, Lars-Gunnar Bodin, Svante Bodin, Henri Chopin, Bob Cobbing, François Dufrêne, Gust Gils, Jarl och Sonja Hammarberg-Åkesson, Sten Hanson, Bernard Heidsieck, C. Christer Hennix, Åke Hodell, Bengt Emil Johnsson, Sandro Key-Åberg, Bengt af Klintberg, Ilmar Laaban, Annea Lockwood & Harvey Matusow, Arrigo Lora-Totino, Ghérasim Luca, Arne Mellnäs, Franz Mon, Ladislav Novák, Dieter Roth & Emmett Williams, Erik Thygesen, Paul de Vree.”

PRIX PRESQUE RIEN PRIZE

In 2010 Brunhild Ferrari decided to make public some of Luc Ferrari’s original sound archives by offering a selected collection of recordings to other composers who may wish to use the material for the creation of original musical works. Her desire was to open this sonic treasure to other artists without wanting to impose any aesthetic direction on them, and with the only purpose of encouraging new artistic inventiveness.
This edition presents the “Presque Rien Prize” winners and other selected works of the first three biennial contests, the most recent contest having taken place in December 2015. Each of the competitions has been concluded by a concert including the winning and other selected works of the competition. While 109 new works were submitted to the three initial editions, we are delighted to keep receiving many other works from over the world for the forthcoming competition in 2017.
CD1, 2011 edition: John Palmer (winner), Elsa Justel (mention), Daniel Blinkhorn (mention), Dinah Bird & Jean-Philippe Renoult.
CD2, 2013 edition: Brian Jacobs (winner), Ayako Sato (mention), James Andean (mention), Masashi Isai, Andrea Belfi, Donia Jourabchi, Takuma Kuragaki.

Mecha/Orga (Greece). Mecha/Orga is the project of Yiorgis Sakellariou. Since its inception in 2003, Yiorgis has released a number of albums and performed his work internationally. He is actively involved with contemporary and experimental music in Greece through his CD-R label Echo Music and as a member of the Centre of Contemporary Music Research and the Hellenic Electroacoustic Composers Association. Adam Asnan (UK). This work, as its title suggests, can be best described as a presentation of materials analogous to a grumble, rustle, gurgle or rasp. As the dialogue and interplay between these materials takes form, periodic lapses give way to variations of perceived obedience and stillness. The retention and encouragement of selected artifacts produced by technological idiosyncrasies or human agency in operation) provide for extra dimensions of punctuation, interruption and diversion. By allowing the sounds of the apparatus to remain, a juxtaposition between the acousmatic window and its inherent artificiality is suggested. With a predilection for the classic theoretical/aesthetic framework of musique concrète, Adam’s work focuses primarily on the variable natures of sound capture, exploration and projection, often utilising the playback device and/or loudspeaker as an instrument in itself. Pauwel De Buck (Belgium). Neenah Foundry is a multi-channel composition constructed from field recordings which were made in the courtyard of an apartment building and in the cafeteria of Sint-Lukas art academy in Gent. The premise for this work was the contrast between these two sound environments. Due to the enclosed nature of these spaces, the surrounding sounds of the city were heavily filtered; only a residue was audible in the courtyard. The overpopulated cafeteria, in combination with its bad acoustics, created a complex frame of sound reflections and textures. Joshua Convey (USA). New York-based Joshua Convey creates textural, rhythmic and, perhaps surprisingly, melodic compositions by weaving traditional instrumentation (guitar, harmonica), field recordings and electronics to create moody tension between the different sounds. Joshua is also a member of Fessenden, a trio with Stephen Fiehn and Haptic’s Steven Hess. Adrián Democ (Slovakia). For flute, soprano and string quartet. Adrián begun studying composition in Brno (Czech Republic) in 2003. Since then, his work has been commissioned and performed across Europe. He is also an improvising player of the fujara and other traditional Slovakian wind instruments. Mastered by Themistoklis Pantelopoulos. Edition of 500 copies.

Kevin DRUMM
“The Mild Temper” [preorder]

Preorder, estimated shipping early july 26. For more than thirty years, Kevin Drumm has developed a unique sonic language situated at the intersection of drone, electronics, improvisation and sound abstraction. Continuously evolving, his work has become one of the most distinctive voices in contemporary experimental music. Comprising more than six hours of music, The Mild Temper presents an extensive collection of pieces built from gradual transformations, micro-acoustic events and frequency-based structures characteristic of Drumm's practice. Across six discs, the music explores varying states of density, resonance and spatiality, reflecting a sustained interest in the physical properties of sound and their perception over extended durations. The title, The Mild Temper, suggests a quiet force rather than an overt gesture. Sonic materials often appear restrained, held in a delicate balance between stasis and motion. Small shifts gradually alter the acoustic landscape as layers of frequencies emerge, recede and recombine throughout the listening experience. Avoiding narrative and dramatic development, these works offer immersion in highly detailed sonic environments where every element contributes to the construction of a deeply absorbing listening space. Attention to texture, depth and duration forms the connective thread throughout the collection. With The Mild Temper, Kevin Drumm continues his exploration of sound as an autonomous phenomenon, presenting a body of work of remarkable coherence that reflects both the singularity and maturity of his artistic practice. “Xkatedral Anthology Series III (An Anthology Of Slowly Evolving Timbral Music)”

XKatedral Anthology Series III is the third installment in a series of archival releases dedicated to presenting music by composers working within the realm of slowly evolving harmonic and timbral music. The pieces presented here focus on the use of synthetic and acoustic sound as well as algorithmic composition as tools for precise work within the realm of spectral exploration. This double-vinyl set is issued in celebration of the label’s decennalia and contains works from 2014 - 2025. It is released in conjunction with reissues of XKatedral Anthology Series I-II. My Falling Sinks by Kali Malone is a sparse descending melody for justly tuned organ, cello and acoustic guitar featuring Lucy Railton and Stephen O’Malley. The piece is a compositional sketch in septimal just intonation made on an experimental tuning organ at La Temple de La Tour-de-Peilz while in residency at La Becque in 2021. Empyrean Flare by Maria W Horn was composed in 2022 for The Dawn Chorus by choreographer Stina Nyberg. This piece uses the Tintinnabuli technique created by Arvo Pärt to animate four supersaw oscillators in slow diatonic arpeggiation, circling around a minor tonic triad, and destabilizing the harmonic framework by means of glissandi and amplifying the sum of its parts by means of analog tape saturation. Tessellation by David Granström was composed using generative synthesis methods in the summer of 2017. The musical periodicity and harmonic movement heard within the piece emerges as a result of fixed synthesized tape loops - exploring a space that opens up between antithetical worlds. To Whoever Shall Inherit the Earth is the first piece of solo music made by Jessica Ekomane and it came together, according to the composer, almost by accident. The work was recorded late one night a decade ago and captures a fleeting, fragile, and unrepeatable moment preserved exactly as it happened. Smoking Mother by Stephen O’Malley was created for Gisèle Vienne's Der Teich / L'Etang by Robert Walser. It was composed during a residency at the SMEM synthesis archive in Fribourg in 2018 and produced at EMS in August 2020. The piece draws from the works of Zia Mohuiddin Dagar, Krzysztof Penderecki and Popol Vuh while exploring the roots of minimalism. Att böja själarna by Mats Erlandsson was composed in 2018 and was included in On Eternity, a collection of four texts and four ten minute cassette loops released in the form of a limited edition box set in 2021 by Irrlicht Förlag. This work features performances by Gaianeh Pilossian and Sara Fors, on violin and voice respectively. This will be my last piece for organ was composed by Theodor Kentros in 2025 and uses groups of clustered oscillators through resonant feedback to synthesize the fluctuating frequencies heard wandering through physical space when detuning an organ. Fault Lines was composed by Daniel M Karlsson using generative methods with a deterministic and finite output solidified for this release. This piece features vocal performances by Sara Fors, Ansis Bētiņš and Artūrs Čukurs. 1. Kali Malone - My Falling Sinks 03:50 2. Maria W Horn - Empyrean Flare 15:00 3. François BAYLE
“Jeita ou murmure des eaux”

A major work in François Bayle’s repertoire, Jeîta ou murmure des eaux provides a journey and an immersion into a world of unleashed energies, with the Jeîta cave serving both as a backdrop and a particle accelerator. Here, the cave indeed stands for the concrete source of the composer’s inspiration as much as the mind space where metamorphoses occur. By combining such figurative spaces and immaterial sound projections, François Bayle evokes another subject, an inhabitant of the multiple and symbolic cave: the listening subject, who always reveals himself, implicitly, at the heart of François Bayle’s musical concerns and the path he has always defended: the acousmatic approach.

Crys COLE & Oren AMBARCHI / Giuseppe IELASI
“Sparkling or Silent / unfamiliar music (paris)”

Sparkling or Silent, by the duo composed of crys cole and Oren Ambarchi, is a moment apart in their respective artistic approaches, taking a step aside and marking a point of fixation around an electroacoustic method which, while always latent in both of their works, here asserts itself as a central compositional modality. However, the electroacoustic approach is not called upon here for its formal reasons, or even less as an aesthetic line to follow. On the contrary, it is seen as a writing tool, open to all possible sonic possibilities, a tool that allows the artist to draw, within the sound itself, an intertwined space where reminiscences, impressions and sensations weave a narrative on the edge of the imagination and the moments experienced together, a narrative in which a complex and sensitive layer of sound is embedded, blurring the boundaries between artistic project, intimate journey and shared dreams. — Derived from a live performance, unfamiliar music (paris) reveals the essence of the obsessions and sonic universe of Giuseppe Ielasi, a musician whose discretion is matched only by his talent and boundless dedication to musical creation over almost 30 years. unfamiliar music (paris) is a remarkable manifestation of Ielasi’s approach, an approach in which delicacy, sometimes nostalgia, and emotions know how, with discretion, to infuse a sound universe built around polyphony and reminiscence, around textures and motifs that intertwine, combine and drive each other with grace and inspiration.
