“Truly an exercise in shifting contexts, Fullman’s haunting voice blends eerily with the sonorities of her “Long String Instrument”, which seems to function as a kind of cosmic fiddle. Konrad Sprenger has created a “wall of sound” behind Fullman with a potpourri of acoustic instruments, including Dreyblatt’s own “excited strings bass”, a zither, violin, electric bass and even tympani along with the Long String Instrument. The pieces on “Ort” range from covers of Woody Guthrie and the traditional John Hardy to new versions of Fullman’s original recordings from the early 1980’s and more recent song-compositions; each marked by Fullman’s evocative textual lyricism and innovative chordal and timbral transformations. “Ort” represents a unique blend of musical styles, from hillbilly-country & western to contemporary minimal, with shades of art-rock. On connait Ellen Fullman pour son travail sur le long string instrument (longues cordes tendues jouées avec les mains). Entre 2000 et 2001, à l’initiative d’Arnold Dreyblatt et lors d’une résidence à Berlin, elle croise le musicien et ingénieur du son, Konrad Sprenger alias Jörg Hiller, pour une plongée dans un album de chansons marquées par la country. Les compositions sont d’Ellen Fullman sauf une reprise de Woody Guthrie ou d’A.P. Carter. Les musiciens qui l’entourent selon les morceaux Jörg Hiller, Sonja Müller, The Barn Owl Sisters, Jessika Kenny, James McCartney, Michael Lytle, Bill Rule. Un superbe disque qui prouve (s’il fallait encore le faire) les liens entre le minimalisme et l’American Primitive Music.
