Together with Thierry, just before his departure, we, some of his close friends, decided to realise this record. A promise and a desire to be able to listen to these electric exchanges engraved on vinyl. This record was made possible thanks to a subscription and various donations. Any profits from sales will be donated to 102 rue d’Alembert in Grenoble.

For many he was the person at the other end of the phone or email at Metamkine’s. For others he was the voice of experimental music on Radio Campus and an imaginative, considerate and tenacious programmer at Le 102 in Grenoble. He also was this diligent companion with whom to attend festivals, share enthusiasm about a performance, or the beer and conversation we’d rather have during the next one. He additionally was the hands and brains of Doubtful Sounds, the catalogue of which label demonstrates the highest of eclectic standards, the will to support comrade artists to the further end of their experimentations, and an authentic passion for the record medium. Lastly, he was of course one of the two guitars of Sun Stabbed, a member of La Morte Young, and a solo artist we would not have mind getting more performances and record releases from. In those, he was exploring the possibilities of the prepared guitar with modesty and an infinite patience, occasionally combining it with dictaphone or Revox-size magnetic tape.

While he would appear as an indoorsy creature, Thierry had developed a passion for New-Zealand that fed off a combine taste for geography, anthropology, and the very distinctive manner of handling guitars that a handful of experimenters have developed since the 1990s. This other side of the world had become the destination of some of his travels, and Bruce Russell (The Dead C), Michael Morley (The Dead C, Gate) or Stefan Neville (Pumice) some of his friends, with whom to spend some time, share an improvisation, or work on a record project.

For all of us who were around until the end, these notes and gritty vibrations sound even stranger. They resonate with the serenity and temperance with which he was able to reassure us even more than we were able to support him. They resonate with his curiosity and his ability to pick up significance in the detail of a sound, a sentence, or a landscape, against the vast inanity of the world. Thierry had dedicated a lot of his life, attention, and intelligence to music, but he knew, in the end, that music is not that important. Thierry had chosen music as a way of making his own way, building friendships, keeping away from the thickheadedness and lack of imagination of a failing capitalist society. Thierry had chosen guitar against the macho and egotistic postures, just to share his wonderment when a little (or a lot) of electric magic gets out of it. I believe he would have appreciated that some of his relation to life would be seen in his relation to the instrument.

Thierry loved New Zealand, and even seemed to find New Zealanders pretty agreeable. Although we first met in France, I’d seen him in NZ a couple of times, so when he suggested we use his summer 2020 visit to record some material it seemed like a nice plan. Of course I had no idea what was ahead. The recording was done in the new sleep-out/studio we had recently finished in the back yard, a simple process that took about an hour. Thierry had to get to grips with the amplifier I lent him, which was not quite what he was used to, but I thought he got some great sounds out of it in the end. After he left for the North Island, COVID suddenly became a massive problem, and he was very lucky to get home before we locked up the whole country for months. But then he got sick again with something much worse than COVID, and it turned out that these sessions were actually a memorial to his last visit to the Antipodes. An entirely fitting memorial to a great friend of New Zealand, and I’m proud to say, a friend of mine too.

C’est avec Thierry juste avant son départ que nous, quelques-uns de ses amis proches, avons décidé de réaliser ce disque. Une promesse et un désir de pouvoir écouter gravés sur vinyle ces échanges électriques. Ce disque a été rendu possible grâce à une souscription et différents dons. Les éventuels bénéfices des ventes seront reversés au 102 rue d’Alembert à Grenoble.

Thierry Monnier, 1972-2022
Pour beaucoup, il a été la présence au bout du fil ou du mail à Metamkine. Pour d’autres, il était une voix de la musique expérimentale sur Radio Campus et un programmateur imaginatif, attentionné et persévérant au 102. Il était aussi cet assidu compagnon de festivals, avec qui on était ravi de partager l’enthousiasme suscité par certains concerts, ou la bière et la conversation préférées à d’autres. Il était encore la tête et les mains du label Doubtful Sounds, dont le catalogue témoigne d’une exigence éclectique, d’une volonté de soutenir des artistes complices jusqu’au bout de leurs expérimentations, et d’un grand amour de l’objet discographique. Enfin, il était bien sûr l’une des deux guitares de Sun Stabbed et œuvrait au sein de La Morte Young, tandis qu’en solo, lors de trop rares concerts et dans quelques publications, il explorait avec une patience infinie les possibilités d’une guitare préparée avec économie, parfois associée aux jeux offerts par la bande magnétique, format Revox ou dictaphone.

Alors qu’on le croyait volontiers casanier, Thierry avait développé une passion pour la Nouvelle-Zélande, nourrie par son goût de la géographie, de l’anthropologie et du traitement si particulier que quelques expérimentateurs y réservent aux guitares depuis les années 1990. Cet autre bout du monde était devenu pour lui une destination visitée à plusieurs reprises, et Bruce Russell (The Dead C), Michael Morley (The Dead C, Gate) ou Stefan Neville (Pumice) des amis chez qui partager un canapé, un bout de route, un projet d’édition ou une improvisation.

Pour nous toutes et tous qui l’avons accompagné jusqu’au bout, ces notes et ces vibrations rauques sonnent plus étrangement encore. Elles résonnent aussi de sa sérénité et de sa tempérance, avec lesquelles il nous a rassuré·e·s autant que nous l’avons accompagné. Elles résonnent de sa curiosité et de sa capacité à relever l’importance du détail d’un son, d’une phrase ou d’un paysage face à l’immense ineptie du monde. Thierry a dédié beaucoup de sa vie, de son attention et de son intelligence à la musique, mais il savait au fond que la musique n’a pas tant d’importance. Thierry avait choisi la musique comme une manière de trouver sa propre voie, de construire ses amitiés, de se tenir un peu en marge des lourdeurs et du manque d’imagination d’une société capitaliste et moribonde. Thierry avait choisi la guitare à l’opposé des postures égotiques ou viriles, pour partager l’émerveillement d’en voir sortir un peu (ou beaucoup) de magie électrique. Je crois qu’il aurait apprécié l’idée que l’on puisse retrouver dans son rapport à l’instrument un peu de son rapport à la vie.

Thierry adorait la Nouvelle-Zélande et semblait même trouver les Néo-Zélandais plutôt agréables. Bien que nous nous soyons rencontrés pour la première fois en France, je l’avais déjà croisé en Nouvelle-Zélande à plusieurs reprises, alors lorsqu’il m’a suggéré que nous profitions de sa visite de l’été 2020 pour enregistrer quelques morceaux, cela m’a semblé être un bon plan. Bien sûr, je n’avais aucune idée de ce qui nous attendait. L’enregistrement s’est fait dans le nouveau studio que nous avions récemment terminé dans le cabanon derrière la maison. Un processus simple qui a pris environ une heure, même si Thierry a dû se familiariser avec l’amplificateur que je lui avais prêté, et qui n’était pas tout à fait ce à quoi il était habitué, mais je pense qu’il a fini par en tirer de très bons sons. Après son départ pour l’île du Nord, le COVID est soudain devenu un problème majeur, et il a eu la chance de rentrer chez lui avant que tout le pays ne soit bloqué pendant des mois. Mais il est retombé malade à cause d’une maladie bien pire que le COVID, et il s’est avéré que ces sessions sont devenues un mémorial de sa dernière visite aux Antipodes. Un mémorial tout à fait approprié pour un grand ami de la Nouvelle-Zélande et, je suis fier de le dire, un ami personnel aussi.
