The four pieces that compose Réminiscences, a masterpiece if ever there was one, create the equivalent of a human day, from dawn to night, from call to cry, from meditation to revolt, through the clash of the sounds of human and natural activities. Simply unique and grandiose.
Jean-Claude Eloy (1938) is a French composer with a classical background who moved away from the structures and models that had carried him until then (models imposed on contemporary music through various institutional and official hegemonies) to create, from the early 1970s onwards, long electroacoustic frescoes, vast poems of sounds and noises between Western and Eastern traditions, the main aim of which is to liberate the sound imagination.

« To achieve these four works (Incantation, Confrontation, Contemplation, Oppression-Liberation), I relied on the sound elements used for the creation of my former work Yo-In, from which I recycled all the electroacoustic parts created at the Institute of Sonology of the University of Utrecht in 1979/1980. I relied also on the huge amount of samples and recordings of percussion instruments made at my request by the japanese percussionist Sumire Yoshihara, in 1979, at the Studio of Electronic Music of Radio NHK in Tokyo ; a studio where I had worked a lot in 1977/1978 (realization of Gaku-no-Michi).
This, for the purpose of transforming this work into an entirely electroacoustic work, freed from the heavy practical constraints of the 1980 version (sound theater for an imaginary ritual), produced with the wonderful participation of Michael W. Ranta.
In other words, my aim was to refocus on the most characteristic sound sources of this work : sirens boats ; sounds from nature (solfatares, volcanoes, wind, rain, waves…) ; african bird song ; noise from machines and factories ; not to mention the many samples of metal, wood and skin percussion instruments…
With this new composition, I turn my back on the « live » aspects that were strongly present since the creation of Yo-In and i have good chances of making the listener focus on the « power of listening », on perception, on the concentration of consciousness around the concrete sound phenomena that were at the source of this work. We are now dealing with a celebration of sound, an acoustic celebration, through the many metamorphoses of its materials and the specific theme of each work. »

Œuvre magistrale si il en est, les quatre pièces qui constituent Réminiscences créent l’équivalent d’une journée humaine, de l’aube à la nuit, de l’appel au cri, de la méditation à la révolte en passant par le choc des bruits des activités humaines et naturelles. Tout simplement unique et grandiose.
Jean-Claude Eloy (1938) est un compositeur français de formation classique qui s’est éloigné des structures et modèles qui l’avaient porté jusque là (modèles imposés à la musique contemporaine à travers diverses hégémonies institutionnelles et officielles) pour créer à partir du début des années 1970 de longues fresques électroacoustiques, vastes poèmes de sons et de bruits entre traditions occidentales et orientales, dont le but principal est la libération de l’imagination sonore.

« Pour réaliser ces quatre œuvres (Incantation, Confrontation, Contemplation, Oppression-Libération), je me suis appuyé sur les éléments sonores utilisés pour la réalisation de mon œuvre ancienne Yo-In, dont j’ai repris les parties électroacoustiques réalisées à l’Institut de Sonologie de l’Université d’Utrecht en 1979-1980. Je me suis appuyé également sur la très grande quantité d’échantillonnages et enregistrements d’instruments à percussion réalisés à ma demande par la percussionniste Sumire Yoshihara, en 1979, au Studio de Musique Electronique de la Radio NHK à Tokyo ; studio où j’avais beaucoup travaillé en 1977-1978 (réalisation de Gaku-no-Michi).
Ceci, dans le but de transformer cette œuvre en une œuvre entièrement et uniquement électroacoustique, dégagée des difficultés pratiques considérables du Yo-In de 1980 (théâtre sonore pour un rituel imaginaire) réalisé avec la magnifique participation de Michael W. Ranta.
Autrement dit, il s’agissait pour moi de faire un retour aux sources sonores les plus caractéristiques de cette œuvre : sirènes de bateaux ; bruits de la nature (solfatares, volcans, vents, pluies, vagues…) ; chants d’oiseaux africains ; bruits de machines et d’usines, etc. sans compter les très nombreux échantillons d’instruments à percussion de métal, de bois, de peaux…
Avec cette nouvelle production, je tourne le dos aux aspects « spectacles » qui étaient fortement présents dès la création de Yo-In et j’ai des chances de pouvoir concentrer l’auditeur sur le pouvoir de « l’écoute », de la perception, de la concentration de la conscience autour des phénomènes sonores concrets qui avaient été à la source de cette œuvre. On a plutôt affaire désormais à une célébration du sonore, une célébration acoustique, à travers les nombreuses métamorphoses de ses matériaux et les thématiques spécifiques de chaque œuvre. »
