This new collection continues Blume’s exploration of James Tenney’s Postal Pieces, presenting four works on vinyl for the first time: Swell Piece, for Alison Knowles (1967), Swell Piece #2, for Pauline Oliveros (1971), Swell Piece #3, for La Monte Young (1971), and Koan, for Malcolm Goldstein (1971), performed by The Barton Workshop under the direction of James Fulkerson.

Created between 1965 and 1971 as short scores sent to friends on postcards, the Postal Pieces stand among Tenney’s most elegant investigations into sound and perception. Built around sustained tones, repetition, intonation and his concept of “swell form,” these deceptively simple works invite the listener into meditative states where beating frequencies, harmonics and instrumental textures gradually come into focus.

The three Swell Pieces emerge from near silence, slowly rising toward dense fields of sustained sound before returning along the same arc, while Koan places a single bowed gesture under intense scrutiny. Minimal in means but remarkably rich in perception, these pieces transform listening itself into the subject of the music — sound as a space for attention, contemplation and discovery.
