In the depths of Geneva’s Fonderie Kugler red-lit-boudoir, stand four grand pianos surrounded by divinities. The two elder Erard brothers are tuned down a quarter tone lower than their neighbours, a twin pair of gleaming and valiant Yamaha’s. Charlemagne and Seppe both sit facing each other, managing the 428Hz tuning from the tip of their left hand, while the right hand controls the conventional 440Hz machine. This four-piano fantasy was born a few years ago, when these two gentlemen met around a carillon, and realised they had a common “passion for unusual tunings and the playing of multiple pianos”. This microtonal duo first premiered at the Bijloke in Ghent (2019), and has since remained slightly concealed until Konnekt provided the little spark to reignite this mystical-keyboard-beast. When the two pianists swap places, during a short moment of inhabited silence, we get a chance to taste what seems to lie beyond the notes. Perhaps the key to appreciating and sharing beauty is magicallyyy mysterioussss after all.

Au fond du boudoir à lumière rouge de la Fonderie Kugler de Genève, quatre pianos à queue se dressent, entourés de divinités. Les deux aînés Erard sont accordés un quart de ton plus bas que leurs voisins, une paire de Yamaha rutilants. Charlemagne et Seppe se font face, gérant l’accordage à 428 Hz du bout de la main gauche, tandis que la main droite contrôle la machine conventionnelle à 440 Hz.
Cette fantaisie à quatre pianos est née il y a quelques années, lorsque ces deux gentlemen se sont rencontrés autour d’un carillon, et ont réalisé leur « passion commune pour les accords inhabituels et le jeu à plusieurs pianos ».
Ce duo microtonal a été créé pour la première fois au Bijloke de Gand (2019), et est depuis resté légèrement caché jusqu’à ce que Konnekt apporte la petite étincelle nécessaire pour rallumer cette bête mystique à clavier. Lorsque les deux pianistes échangent leur place, pendant un court moment de silence habité, nous avons la chance d’apercevoir ce qui semble se trouver au-delà des notes. Peut-être que la recette du partage de la beauté est magiquementtttttt mysssssstérieuse après tout.
